Mixed Media Valentine Tag for Donna Salazar

I hope you had a lovely weekend. I had the wonderful opportunity to judge at a debate tournament this past weekend. Fortunately, I was able to switch back to my creative side to put together this Valentine inspired tag featuring Donna Salazar products.

Tips and Techniques

Donna's products are so yummy for mixed media creations. She has some gorgeous stamps created by Art Gone Wild. I started out by stamping the tag with her crackle stamp using Mix'd Media CHOX Inx, then added the stanza stamping at the bottom. If you are stamping before misting, It's a great idea to used Donna's CHOX inks which are permanent. The regular Mix'd Media Inx are water based and tend to bleed and shift when misted. That can be a very cool effect, but not what I was looking for here. 

Next I used Donna's Want2Scrap Love Stencil with Polka Dots and Arrow with light molding paste to create the word love and the polka dot heart. I then heat embossed with MMI Embossing powders.

I did some more stamping around the tag with Donna's Dear Sir and Vine stamps then used my handy dandy Distrezz-it-All by Zutter on all the edges. Once everything was good and dry, I misted the tag with water, then Donna's Clearsnap Smooch Spritz in Tea Party and Caramel Latte. I spritzed with a little more water and tapped the tag to drip excess mist down the tag. I adore how the mist pooled onto the embossed molding paste. Now, I'm not one to waste much, so I dragged the distezzed edges of my tag through the overspray mist on my craft mat to color. There was still a small amount of mist on my mat, so I spritzed it with more water and colored my seam binding ribbon with the remaining color. I pulled the ribbon through the color to allow for grungy variations.

Here's a new flower I've created. I will be sharing a tutorial for this Lacey Open Rose in my next post. So be sure to come back February 22 for the details. Before using up the last of the mist on my mat for my ribbon, I brushed some of it across my flower and leafy die cut. 

Finally, I dabbed the flower, lace, and edges with Glue Gloss, then sprinkled with Donna's Fairy Dust Glitter in Pralines and Cream.

Birthday Card featuring Leaky Shed Studio Chipboard

Birthday's are special days to celebrate, and I enjoy creating handcrafted cards for my family for their special days. Here's one I created featuring lots of gorgeous Leaky Shed Studio Chipboard. 

"Birthday Wishes"

Tips and Techniques

I took the one of the small butterflies and soaked it in warm water until it was soft and wet through. Then I pulled each of the wings apart into three layers, leaving the body and antennae intact. I curled up and shaped the layers with my fingers and heat set. I painted with gold metallic paint, then dry brushed with metallic blue paint. 

The Blowing Leaves Frame was painted using a fine tip paintbrush. One of the things I like to do is to swirl two or three colors of paint together, but not mix thoroughly. Then, when I paint, I get variations in the colors.

Here's another angle of the butterfly corner.

I stamped the sentiment onto a flag shape I had cut and inked, then added a resin piece and flower to the base.

I cut a Flower Corner into two pieces to layer under the sentiment. I treated it with a quick coat of metallic paint.

I've used another chipboard piece to frame my sentiment inside the card, the medium Victorian Oval Frame. I folded and tucked a piece of ombre organza ribbon on each side.

Here's the card at another angle. Behind the sentiment, I have misted then over the mist, stenciled a crackle design. Each of the layers is inked and distressed.

"Men in Black" ~ Really Reasonable June 1 Challenge

I enjoy creating grungy masculine pages, and the Really Reasonable Ribbon Challenge #73 gave me the opportunity to put one together. I just adore this photo of Andrew and his groomsmen enjoying those last final moments before the wedding.

I'm also featuring some Donna Salazar Products on this layout which I will list at the end of my post. Donna's Girly Grunge style (emphasis on grunge) is just perfect for a masculine page. 

Tips and Techniques:

Jute Twine Flowers ~ I used Jute String to create the twine flowers and my tutorial can be viewed here.  I selected buttons from the Natural Button Grab Bag for my flower centers sized so that you can still see the woven stitching. Of course I tied the buttons with some of the Jute String. 

Rolled Burlap Flower ~ I used the Burlap Woven Ribbon to create the smaller burlap flower and some vintage washers and a screw for the center.

Chipboard Flourishes ~ I painted Donna Salazar's card size Hand Drawn Swirls chipboard, then stamped with her "Dear Sir" Stamp and edged with Chox Mix'd Media Inx. 

Textured Flower Background ~ I cut flower petal sections from black card stock using Donna Salazar's Grand Peony Dies just larger than each of the jute/burlap flowers. I then dry embossed using the Tim Holtz Burlap embossing folder. I rubbed the raised portion with a little Faber-Castell Gold Gelato. 

Textured Leaves ~ The leaves are also cut from black cardstock using the Grand Peony leaf dies. I hand creased the leaves where the natural veining would be and colored by dry rubbing with Gelatos. 

Stenciling ~ I used Donna's new Midnight Chox Inx over the TCW Diamond Stencil for a fabulous masculine design over the bricked background. 

Woven Gears ~ My friend, Mandy, gave me these vintage gears and machined pieces that her grandfather had stashed in his basement. I wove them together using Black Grosgrain Ribbon. Aren't they a delightful touch? I cut pieces of Score-Tape to adhere this piece to the page. This strong yet thin tape is perfect to adhere anything from delicate ribbon to heavier metal pieces. 

Layers ~ I love how the photo was taken at an angle. I turned it so the guys are straight and the photo angled. I layered lots of textured pieces at more angles under the photo - More embossed and Gelato'd card stock, grunged DSD Corrugated board, and this delightful Jute Ribbon. 

Gears ~ I used a mix of metal and die cut gears to tuck into the edges of my page and around the cluster. I die cut and embossed black card stock with Donna's Sprightly Sprockets dies and rubbed gold Viva Ink Gold to give the grungy metallic sheen. 

Distressing ~ I used the DSD Distrezz-It-All for all my distressing.

Arrows ~ I mixed black paint into Liquitex Blended Fibers and used Donna's new Want2Scrap Large Arrow Stencil to create these arrows.

"Maid of Honor" for RRR Challenge #71 ~ Sparkle, Bling, and Ribbon

Weddings are such special days, celebrated with the people closest to us. You can see the joy and sweet friendship shared by Rachel and her Maid of Honor, Amber. 

I am so excited to share my first post as a designer for Really Reasonable Ribbon. It was a delight to work with the gorgeous RRR ribbon, cording, and lace on this wedding layout. My original thought was to use some beautiful white seam binding and wrinkle ribbon for this page, but when I realized how PERFECTLY the red ribbon in the RRR May Ribbon Club Assortment matched the red on the girls' dresses, I had a change of plans.

Tips and Techniques:

Ribbons ~ I cut paper ribbon strips then wet and scrunched them to give a fabric-like appearance. I clustered them below the flowers, then topped with the red RRR ribbons. This gorgeous red metallic satin and satin/organza ribbon with the sparkling white iridescent stitching are both part of the RRR May Ribbon Club Assortment. Joseph and Rachel had a December wedding so their colors were red and green. Rachel had accents of red on her gorgeous dress and Amber's maid of honor dress was this same rich red. I really couldn't believe my eyes at what a perfect match this ribbon is to the dresses. 

Distressing ~ I used my favorite scrappy tool, my Donna Salazar Distrezz-It-All by Zutter.

Twine Flowers ~ I enjoy creating twine flowers, so I thought I'd try making some up with the Iridescent, Metallic White Thread in several sizes. I added a large rhinestone to each as a flower center. My twine flower tutorial can be found here. 

Embossed Vellum Flowers ~ I created these beauties to use with my ScrapThat! May Kit and am so glad I had extras to use on this page. They make such a lovely cluster with the twine flowers. If you would like to learn how to create some for yourself, be sure to stop back for my tutorial on May 9. 

Lace ~ Not only was the red ribbon a perfect match, this white lace included in the RRR May Ribbon Club Assortment is perfect for a wedding page as well. I cut a paper strip to go across the page, distressed the edges, and topped with this gorgeous ribbon. 

Title ~ I printed my title using Chopin Script (found on the internet) onto ink jet transparency paper, fussy cut to the shape of this opening so the edges would be less visible, and adhered to the page with krylon spray adhesive. 

Chipboard ~ I blinged up this chipboard from the BoBunny with Rhinestones from my stash. 

Butterfly ~ I added some black diamond stickles to the body of this Martha Stewart vellum butterfly, then rubbed a touch of black soot Distress Ink across the veins. A snippet of a Zva crystal flourish finishes it off for a butterfly trail.

"A Perfect Day" Details ~ ScrapThat! Feb. Kit

I'm back today to share the details of "A Perfect Day" Created with the February ScrapThat! Kit. As you may remember, Elizabeth brought Andrew into our family back in October. We were delighted to receive the wedding photos last month just in time for me to use one to create the final LO with my gorgeous February Kit. Aren't they a sweet couple?

"A Perfect Day"

Tips and Techniques:

Ribbons ~ I used the cream cardstock in the kit to cut ribbons. I then used a foam applicator to apply Distress inks to pull out the colors found on the focal background paper. Finally I distressed the edges with my Prima distressing tool and edged with a darker distress ink. To make them look more like actual ribbon, I gently bent and crumpled them until they had a soft fabric like appearance. I then snipped some pieces from two of the kit ribbons to layer over top of the paper ribbon strips. Our former DT, Marilyn Rivera, is a master of transforming paper to look and drape like fabric and I got this idea from her. You will be inspired by a visit her blog, Treasuring Memories.

Netting ~ The kit came with gorgeous netting that works so well to add extra dimension. Here I tucked some behind my flower cluster.

Wood Heart Flourish ~ I painted the KaiserCraft Heart with gold metalic paint and when dry stamped across the piece with a script stamp using black Stazon.

Chipboard Frame ~ I added this Dusty Attic Chipboard piece from my stash. I love this photo, but Andrew's had around Elizabeth's shoulder a bit pronounced when placed on a scrapbook page. Using the chipboard piece to frame and layer over the photo took care of that little "problem." The technique here is so easy peasy. I simply painted with metallic paint and when dry took some Distress ink in a darker shade to add dimension on the edges. 

Puffy Hearts ~ These Green Tara hearts are included in the EAO kit. They were just a little bright for this page, so I spritzed them with some cork Glimmer Mist to get more of a burgundy color. 

Distressed Layers ~ I framed the photo with two of the kit cardstock papers and used my Donna Salazar/Zutter Distrezz-It-All on the edges. Behind the top right corner, I placed a corner from the gorgeous square doily found in the main kit. 

Medallion ~ The kit includes these kraft journal spots which made the perfect base for my medallion. The pearl ribbon slide is also in the kit and the paper ribbons are described earlier. The metal heart is from my stash. 

Hand Stitching ~ I drew a swirled line around the border of my layout in pencil, then went back and pierced stitching holes, erased the pencil mark and stitched with coordinating embroidery floss. I used to cross stitch, so I have an entire box of DMC floss to choose from. 

Mixed Media Butterfly ~ What is a page without some mixed media? I used some Martha Stewart White Texture Effect over one of her butterfly stencils, then sprinkled on some gold microbeads. 

Title ~ This really was a perfect day, so this title worked perfectly for my page. Originally, I cut it out in the beautiful bracket frame from the page. I brushed on some Ranger Rock Candy Distress Paint. I didn't set it aside far enough to allow it to dry, because I accidentally laid some scrap paper on top, ruining the edge. It was one of those happy mistakes, since I like the words cut out better than I did in the frame. I'm here to tell you, always look for the lemonade when those scrappy lemons happen.

"Live Life Beautifully" Birthday Card for SOUS Sketch Challenge

It's hard to believe that January is nearly over already. I'm so happy that the daylight is getting longer each day now.

Our oldest daughter has a birthday coming up, so I created a card for her inspired by the SOUS January 16 Card Sketch. She loved the vintage anniversary card that I created for my husband last summer, so I dug out my BoBunny Weekend Market paper. This is one of my all time favorite collections by BoBunny!! One of the SOUS challenges was to use scraps on your card, so other than my card base and a couple pieces of NoteWorthy, all of my papers are scraps from previous projects, even the flowers.

Tips and Techniques:

Vintage Finds ~ Grace loves keys and loves to write with fountain pens. This gorgeous skeleton key is from the Etsy Shop Zeus and Zoey and can be found here. The pen nib was a trinket I had found and saved in my treasure box. The vintage buttons were a gift from my husband's cousin, Debbie Clapper who gave me not one but two of her mom's old button tins. Oh what treasures lie in those tins!! Thanks Debbie!!

Sweet Open Roses ~ These were actually the roses I created when I photographed my step by step tutorial earlier this month using scraps of paper from my January ScrapThat! Kit. That tutorial can be found here. 

Distressing ~ I so enjoy my Donna Salazar/Zutter Distrezz-It-All and use it on nearly every project I create!! It makes such quick work of my distressing and gives such cool thick ragged edges. I used it on the circle and all straight edges. I did pull out my Prima Distress tool for the rounded corners of my ticket. 

Fussy Cutting ~ the ticket and sentiment piece were fussy cut from some scraps of Weekend Market paper.

Birthday Card for BoBunny & Stuck On U Sketches

It's been a wonderful kind of busy around our home preparing for Christmas. It's so wonderful to reflect on the love of God sent to us in Christ. It's also a wonderful time of the year for us to gather and spend time as a family. I so look forward to that each year. 

Our sweet daughter, Rachel, (our son's wife) has a birthday coming up, and I created this card for her using BoBunny's Gabriel Collection for their December Card Challenge to use lace and ribbon on a card. 

I stopped by Stuck on U Sketches and just had to use their current card sketch. This is my first time to enter one of their challenges. They have some new card designers providing amazing inspiration so be sure to drop by their blog to be inspired.

Tips and Techniques:

Lace ~ I used BoBunny's Gabrielle lace to create the strips across the card. I have found that for sheer lace like this, an acid free spray adhesive like Krylon works well. 

Inking ~ My favorite ink for aged/distressed edges continues to be Ranger Distress Ink. I inked around the medallion. 

Butterfly Trail ~ I used the pearl strand from BoBunny Gabriel to create the trail. I used Gabrielle Pollacco's suggestion of Tombo Multi Liquid adhesive to tack down portions of the pearls to hold them in place. 

Rub-On/Mulberry Paper ~ I wanted to use the rub-on birthday sentiment from the Gabrielle Card Kit, but thought the background was too busy to apply it directly to the card. I applied the sentiment to a scrap of mulberry paper. I then wet a q-tip and "painted" the water where I wanted the torn edges around the rub-on. While wet, it tore easily giving the wonderful feathered edges that mulberry paper does so beautifully. An old technique that still looks fresh today. I like that the mulberry paper is sheer and the background can still be seen without the sentiment getting lost.

Forever ~ Tips and Techniques: ScrapThat! October Kit

I hope you're having a lovely weekend!!

Thanks for joining me today for Tips and Techniques from my Forever layout, the third and final page created with the gorgeous ScrapThat! October Kit.

Tips and Techniques:

Handcrafted Flower ~ I created the large pink flower with Donna Salazar's Grand Peony die set and added pearls from the kit to create the lovely center. I lightly inked the petals with the handy Prima ink included in this kit.

Misting ~ I glimmer misted slightly above where my photo was to be placed and then misted lightly with water to encourage the drips that you see below the photo dripping into the flower cluster.

Title ~ The felt letters were a bit grey so I inked them with distress ink to coordinate with my page. I do NOT recommend doing this. Because the letters are felt, they did not dry. I kept patting with paper towels until they no longer removed ink when patting. :-)

Fussy Cut Flowers ~ I added some flowers fussy cut from paper scraps to the edges of this cluster.

Scrunched Ribbon ~ I put some strong double sided adhesive onto my paper where I wanted the scrunched ribbon, then starting on one side with a long ribbon, started scrunching and randomly laying the ribbon onto the adhesive, then when I was finished, trimmed the other end. In a couple places where the ribbon wanted to pop up, I went back and added a bit more adhesive.

Wet Paper Scrunching ~ I wanted a depression in the top of my mat to set this lovely wood Prima clock. I wet the paper and pushed it down with my fingers and let it sit to dry before tucking the clock behind the little depression I created. I sanded the edges of the clock for a more distressed look.

Hand Stitching ~ the edge of the center mat was hand stitched with crochet thread. I have discovered that a single strand of crochet thread looks gorgeous and is easier to stitch with than several strands of embroidery floss.

First Dance ~ Tips and Techniques ScrapThat! October Kit

I hope you are having a delightful week and have some fun times planned for this weekend. I have some scrappy projects due next week, so I get to do some creating this weekend. Today, I'll be spending the day creating with my friend, Mandy who has some craft fair projects to work on. Then Saturday and Sunday I'm heading to a crop at our local craft store, Pat Catan's, for their monthly crop.

Today, I would like to share with you the details of my First Dance Layout created with the amazing October ScrapThat! Kit featuring Prima's Tea Thyme papers. This is our son and his beautiful bride sharing their first dance on their wedding day, December 2011.

Tips and Techniques:

Transparency Butterflies ~ These sweet butterflies were created by printing butterfly images onto inkjet transparency paper. While the ink was still wet, I covered the images with clear embossing powder and heat set. To prevent the transparency paper from shrinking and warping, I kept the heat tool further from the image than I normally would, and took my time melting the embossing powder. While the embossing was still hot and wet, I added more clear embossing powder and heat set again. Once it was set and dry, pulled the wings forward from the body for some added dimension.

Hand Stitching ~ I drew a curved, looped line around the border of the page stopping at the edge of the bricks and horizontal paper strip. I used this line to pierce stitching holes for my hand stitching.

Ceramic Stucco Bricks ~ I sprayed the back of my brick stencil with some removable adhesive, allowed it to dry, then placed it on my page where I wanted a brick wall image. I used a craft spatula to spread the Ceramic Stucco Medium over the stencil. After carefully removing the stencil, I used my heat tool to dry, then moved the stencil to coordinate with the bricks already on the page and repeated this process around the page. Once all the brick work was dry, I spritzed with several colors of inks and mists to get the brick color I was looking for. I love that they are mottled and the color varied just like it would be on an actual brick wall. You can't see it in the photo, but the walls in the reception hall were exposed brick, making this a perfect background for this page.

Altered Flowers ~ I altered the Petaloo flowers with several shades of mist and gesso. For the flower on the left side, I removed the center and used the pearls from the kit to create a new one. The Prima clock was a perfect addition to this cluster.

Photo Mat Layers ~ The layers behind the photo were fussy cut from scraps of the Prima paper. Two sheets of paper had lovely frame pieces that were just the right size to cut and layer. The colors didn't go with this page, so I misted them and inked the edges. I also added a doily from my stash that I misted before tucking into the layers. The square photo mat and layout edges were distressed with my Zutter Distrezz-It-All by Donna Salazar.

Vines ~ The swirled vine tendrils were created with wires cut from the kit flowers and leaves. I simply wrapped them around a small diameter paint brush, then pulled and bent them to look more natural.

Fussy Cutting ~ I added some fussy cut flowers to this cluster. I like to get a lot of milage out of my papers, so whenever possible I cut out paper that is covered up by other papers. For instance when I have a frame around my page, I cut it about 1 inch wide, so I still have a 10 x 10 inch piece of paper to use for photo mats, cutting flowers, fussy cutting .  .  .

Kennedy House ~ ScrapFIT Reveal Workout #66

What a gorgeous color combination for our Workout challenge at ScrapFIT!! I had so much fun working with these luscious colors ~ sand, mint, and cherry. 

When all the children were still at home we made an annual trip to Salt Fort State Park. While Gary and Joseph would go out fishing, the girls and I would take to the trails. One of the trails leads to the beautiful old stone Kennedy House. There is no road to the house, so the only way to get there was by the trails.

Techniques:

Layered Flower ~ I've enjoyed making these layered flowers lately. The bottom layer is a woven fabric cut on the Tattered Floral Die and inked with Pumice Stone Distress Ink. The next layer ~ the daisy-like green leaves were cut from a kraft color coffee filter. I love the texture in this paper with the miniature dots. They were inked with Iced Spruce Distress Ink. Next comes one of my hand crafted twine flowers created with a thinner hemp cord using my Twine Flower Tutorial. I topped that with two layers of red pearlized paper cut from the Donna Salazar Carnation Creations Spellbinder die set.  I wet the paper and pleated the petals. Then finally the center is a Petaloo flower center.  I cut this gorgeous mint Prima Pearl and Crystal flourish to use part of it here.

Carnation Flower ~ Again I used Red Pearl paper to cut a single flower with the Donna Salazar Carnation Creations die, wet the paper and pleated the petals. Once dry, I inked the edges with Pumice Stone Distress Ink. then folded it in half and in half again to form this carnation shape and layered the piece of Prima mint  pearl/crystal flourish over the folded edge. 

Sign ~ I cut the sign post from a very heavy cardstock using the Spellbinder Elegant Posts die. I painted it with a heavy coat of Gesso, then while wet applied the heat tool until it bubbled up. If the gesso doesn't bubble as much as you want, add more gesso and continue to heat. I tinted the gesso with some brown paint and also applied some Vintage Photo Distress Ink. A photo tutorial for this technique in a darker color can be found here.  I use mini 1/16 inch eyelets in the sign to hang it with chain from my stash. 

Doily ~ My doily was cut from the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. Thanks for loaning me your cart, Mandy!! I then cut a circle of paper for the inside of the doily and distressed, inked and hand stitched the edges. Finally, I applied a couple layers of ATG adhesive on the back edge of the circle and then carefully applied the lace to the edge. 

Tag ~ I used the Tim Holtz 12 tags of 2012 April technique to create my tag using the reflections stamps and an embossing folder.  I created the stick pin with beads from my stash, and the crinkle ribbon was dyed with Distress Stain. I painted the word trinket with red paint and wiped it off leaving the word "Wander" much more visible.
