"Experience Fun" Layout for Leaky Shed Studio and Once Upon A...Sketch

The September Once Upon A...Sketch Challenge is open. Although there is no journaling "theme" this month, there is a twist. You must include "handwritten" journaling on your layout!

I've created a fun and funky layout featuring the Leaky Shed Studio Ferris Wheel. My sister, Terry, and I enjoy going to Knoebels Amusement Park. We travel with friends Kelly and John. He is a camera enthusiast and captured this fabulous Ferris wheel shot. When I saw this Leaky Shed Studio piece, I knew this would be the perfect photo to pair with it.

Journaling Theme: Open theme...with a twist

For this month's challenge, you can scrap about any theme BUT you need to include your own handwritten journalling on your page!

You are free to interpret our theme ANY WAY you like. Whilst the theme is open, you MUST base it on the sketch below and include your HANDWRITTEN journaling ON YOUR PAGE. Acceptable journaling is MORE than just a sentence, or generic writing such as date/place etc. . . It needs to be present and at least 3 lines long.

Tips and Techniques

I heat embossed the Ferris wheel and towers with silver embossing powder. The fabulous engraved design in the center stayed in tact through this process. Each of the cars is embossed with a different color of Fran-tage embossing enamel. I added pieces of chain to the spokes for added texture and gears to the center.

In places across the page, I've spread transparent Viva Crackle Paint, then spritzed with mist to highlight the cracks. 

Yes, you know how I adore changing things up in non-traditional ways. Rather than placing all of the cars around the wheel, I've extended three of them from my photo "attaching" them with lengths of chain. 

I layered strips of sheetrock tape under the photo, then stenciled with Viva Special Effects Paste in Amber Gold to stencil around the photo.

I transformed these dated metal word pieces by brushing them with a couple colors of metallic paint, then sanding the raised portions to highlight the words. The copper gears were grunged by dabbing on some of the same metallic paint for a patina effect.

Once Upon A..Sketch and Leaky Shed Sudio

The July Challenge is up and live at Once Upon A...Sketch

with a journaling theme, "Numbers." 

The Warthers Museum is just down the road from us and is filled with amazing hand carved trains. On the museum grounds is a red vintage red caboose. The afternoon sunlight was caught and bounced by this hanging caboose light. As I planned my page, Leaky Shed Studio Gear Set was an obvious choice. You'll find all the details below.

Tips and Techniques

The caboose light has such rustic charm aglow in the afternoon light, yet corroded with rust and peeling paint. I wanted to pull that charm onto the page with my chipboard. I started by painting the gears with metallic and pearlized paints. Then I covered the gears in Ranger Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint. When dry and cracked, I rubbed black ink into the cracks to highlight.

I collect jewelry finding odds and ends whenever I see them clearanced out at craft stores. You just never know when they might come in handy. Here I've used some to give some glam to the rustic background. On the larger piece, I've centered blue rhinestones on the metal pieces to pick up the blue of the light. The centers are decorated with charms and a piece from a door handle.

Yes, this is plain old corrugated board. I wanted it to look like the rusty corrugated tin you might find around an old railroad yard. I painted it with metallic pewter and rust paints, then brushed on Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint here and there. I've added a pop of color and texture by spreading glossy accents along a portion of either side the corrugated piece then sprinkled with mini marbles and microbeads. When dry, I brushed on blue alcohol ink. 

I've used the same techniques for these clock hands, which were left from a previous project.

I've mixed a variety of colors and textures in my flower cluster including the round mini light bulb colored with alcohol ink. The flowers were dry brushed with gesso to soften.

My journaling is on the back and says:

On a beautiful summer day I visited the Warthers Museum with my friend, Kelley. We enjoyed the displays of hand carved trains and the Button House full of vintage buttons arranged so beautifully on the walls. Then we walked the grounds and explored the B & O C-2122 train caboose. This rusty light caught and reflected the afternoon sun so beautifully, and it is one of my favorite shots of the day.

Birthday Card featuring Leaky Shed Studio Chipboard

Birthday's are special days to celebrate, and I enjoy creating handcrafted cards for my family for their special days. Here's one I created featuring lots of gorgeous Leaky Shed Studio Chipboard. 

"Birthday Wishes"

Tips and Techniques

I took the one of the small butterflies and soaked it in warm water until it was soft and wet through. Then I pulled each of the wings apart into three layers, leaving the body and antennae intact. I curled up and shaped the layers with my fingers and heat set. I painted with gold metallic paint, then dry brushed with metallic blue paint. 

The Blowing Leaves Frame was painted using a fine tip paintbrush. One of the things I like to do is to swirl two or three colors of paint together, but not mix thoroughly. Then, when I paint, I get variations in the colors.

Here's another angle of the butterfly corner.

I stamped the sentiment onto a flag shape I had cut and inked, then added a resin piece and flower to the base.

I cut a Flower Corner into two pieces to layer under the sentiment. I treated it with a quick coat of metallic paint.

I've used another chipboard piece to frame my sentiment inside the card, the medium Victorian Oval Frame. I folded and tucked a piece of ombre organza ribbon on each side.

Here's the card at another angle. Behind the sentiment, I have misted then over the mist, stenciled a crackle design. Each of the layers is inked and distressed.

"Summer Sunset"

Each season has its particular beauty, and a summer sunset at the beach has its own special glory. This photo was taken last summer when Gary and I went to the East Coast for our 30th anniversary. One evening we went to the beach and boardwalk of Atlantic City. The Boardwalk held little attraction for me, but the beauty of the sea was just amazing and this 7 Dots Studio 9th Wave Collection was just perfect to showcase it along with Really Reasonable Ribbon and RRR's new Wild Orchid Crafts Mulberry Flowers.

I'm posting this over at the August Sketch Challenge up at Dusty Attic with inspiration from Mistra's gorgeous sketch which I've turned as shown: 

Tips and Techniques: 

I painted the leafy DA chipboard flourishes with several shades of metallic Lumiere paint, then added some gold Shimmerz Blingz to highlight. 

Another DA Chipboard piece that reminds me of floating sea grass. 

I created this triple loop bow with Sheer Iridescent Blue/Green Organza Ribbon by May Arts. I used a variation of Ginny's Double Loop Bow Tutorial found here. 

Included in my cluster are some of Bonnie's new Wild Orchid Crafts Mulberry Flowers which are a new offering at RRR. Here I've used the White Sweetheart Bossoms, White/Cream Cherry Blossoms, and the White 30mm Wild Roses. 

Here you can see another of the Sweetheart Blossoms tucked in with a Petaloo flower and Spellbinders Foliage leaves that remind me of seaweed. 

Here's a close-up of the mixed media I applied to my background - a blending of molding paste with a Prima stencil, mist, and Shimmerz Blingz. You can see my misted lace as well using a couple different mists.
