Introducing the Amazing Paper Grace Home Sweet Quilt Collection with Quilted Card Two Ways

 
Welcome to my creative space!

My grandmother created gorgeous quits from lovely scraps of fabric. I remember visiting my grandparents as a child and seeing the quilt rack pulled up to the ceiling amazed at the beautiful designs peeking through. My grandfather crafted a special quilt rack for her that hung from chains where she spent many creative hours hand quilting her beautiful designs. This has made it a special joy to create beautiful shabby chic quilted cards with the fabulous Amazing Paper Grace Filigree Eight Point Star set (S4-1251) from the newly released Home Sweet Quilt Collection! 

As I child my grandmother's creative spirit inspired me. I often thought I would become a quilter, but that creative inspiration turned into mixed media paper crafting instead. I'm so thankful for her beautiful inspiration and how much it means in my life.

I started out by die cutting the filigree points and wanted to alternate colors as you so often see on fabric quilts. The points are directional, so I needed to cut out eight points in each color, but could only use four of each for this card. I set aside the extras to get a head start on a second card. 

Yellow is a complementary color to purple and this pairing of colors is just gorgeous. With the filigree points already die cut for the second card, I wanted to show a different direction with the colors and used blue with just a hint of lavender to keep it in the same cool color family. 

The embossed design that frames both quilt squares uses the Orange Peel Quilt 3D Embossing Folder (E3D-046), and the sentiments are from the Quilty Hugs Sentiments Clear Stamp Set (STP-156). These sweet sets are from the new Home Sweet Quilt Collection.

Because I went with a masculine design last week, I didn't end up using the floral and foliage dies from the Sweetheart Envelope & Notecard Die of the Month Set (DOMAPG-DEC22) so used them here to create the mulberry purple centered flowers and green leaves used on both cards. The scale of these gorgeous flowers is just perfect with this quilted design.

Tips and Techniques
What a gorgeous die set to work with. The details are just so gorgeous from the filigree points to the stitched triangles and inlay frames that bring this design together so effortlessly. 

This card pairs the beautiful golden yellow with the purples.

The floral filigree points were a little on the light side so I didn't get a good contrast with the yellow background. It was an easy fix. I inked them lightly with Milled Lavender Distress Ink to darken them just a little to get the nice contrast I was looking for. 

***Designer Tip*** If you love a patterned paper die cut, but the color isn't quite working just right, it can be altered with inks.

These sweet flowers are die cut from ivory mulberry paper using the December Sweetheart Envelope & Notecard Set (DOMAPG-DEC22) and the leaves are cut from soft green patterned paper. I added a small ivory rosebud and chipboard leaves from my stash.

The white quilted points in the center make a gorgeous base for this simple cluster. I die cut two sets of white points then added washi tape to the back to hold all the pieces in place.

The sentiment is stamped with Hickory Smoke Distress Archival ink onto white cardstock with the coordinating Quilty Hugs Sentiments Clear Stamp Set (STP-156). I wanted to keep it small so more of the quilted design would be visible, so cut it out closely with scissors and inked the edges lightly with Hickory Smoke Distress Ink.

In this close-up you can see how lovely the stitched details are in these die cut pieces.

The embossed design is just so gorgeous to frame this beautiful quilt square. By using white cardstock with the Orange Peel Quilt 3D Embossing Folder (E3D-046), it adds lovely texture, but keeps the focus on the beautiful quilted pattern. The entire card is framed with a piece of coordinating purple patterned paper.
    
Now let's take a look at how these same filigree points paired with blue patterned paper. The quilts my grandmother created had lovely designs in the fabric, so when looking through my stash of papers I looked for patterns with a small scale that would look like fabrics quilted together. 

Since the filigree points were already cut, and I had put this card together once, this second one came together more quickly, yet each has a distinctive look with the different color palettes. 

I used another sweet sentiment from the Quilty Hugs Sentiments Clear Stamp Set (STP-156) using the same Hickory Smoke color that is used on the yellow card.

This time the floral filigree points contrasted nicely with the blue paper beneath, so no need to ink them.

Here is the third mulberry paper flower I created using the December Sweetheart Envelope & Notecard Set (DOMAPG-DEC22) along with another pair of lovely green leaves. 

It's paired with two pink rosebuds and more delicate chipboard.

I framed this card with more of the embossed design and framed it using the same lavender blue paper used for the quilt square. I normally use 1/4 inch double sided adhesive on the edges to adhere layers, but for this embossed layer, I knew there would be less contact with the adhesive because of the raised design, so used 1/2 inch double sided adhesive to be on the safe side.

Thanksgiving Floral Home Decor Pumpkin for Amazing Paper Grace

Welcome to my creative space!

When I think of Thanksgiving of course family and counting our blessings comes to mind, but I also think of fall colors and pumpkins. I've altered this ceramic pumpkin with black gesso, waxes, and of course the fabulous Amazing Paper Grace Thanksgiving sentiment from the Merry Everything set (S4-1205), a part of The Right Words Collection. I picked up the pumpkin a few years back at a yard sale with the intent to give it new life. I'd adore knowing what you think!

This Thanksgiving sentiment is cut from fall patterned paper and again from thin black chipboard to give it more stability. It's offset layered to form a beautiful shadow effect. The word happy is in the die set, so could be used on a Happy Thanksgiving card. I was thinking outside of the box to use just the the one word which is a perfect fit for this lovely holiday decor piece. 

All of the flowers are handcrafted from textured mulberry paper die cut with the Petite Floral Potpourri set (S3-420) and Grand Cinch and Go Flowers (S5-436). The smaller fall leaves are cut from watercolor paper spritzed with fall colored mists using the Fall Label Motifs set (S5-519).

Tips and Techniques
The Thanksgiving sentiment is adhered right to the ceramic pumpkin. On top of the pumpkin, I've arranged the handcrafted flowers and leaves along with a couple chipboard and larger fall mulberry paper leaves that were pre-made. 

To add lovely texture, the bottom portion of the pumpkin is covered in mesh that came from a piece of vintage cloth. It was cut randomly in a rather circular shape then glued onto the pumpkin. Then it's painted with black gesso to cover the shiny orange ceramic surface and netting. Once dry the surface is brushed with waxes in oranges, blues, and gold to add shimmery color. 

Years ago I bought a pack of textured mulberry paper. It was actually in a pile of crafty goodies to give to a friend, but I realized it would be perfect for making flowers. I pulled out the fall colors: tan; orange; and yellow to die cut. The larger blossoms are cut with the Grand Cinch and Go Flowers die set (S5-436) and the smaller blossoms from Petite Floral Potpourri (S3-420). 

Beaded stamen from my stash fill the centers of the larger blossoms. I didn't have coordinating stamen for the smaller flowers, so mixed paints I have on hand to get colors that are close. 

***Designer Tip*** 
If you enjoy creating handcrafted blossoms, but don't want to store stamen in every color in the rainbow and more, a few bottles of craft paint can be blended to create about any color you may need. I have a few packs of sparkling beaded stamen, then several shapes and sizes of white, that I color as needed. Just make sure they're dry before inserting them into your blossoms.

Here's the back side of the floral cluster surrounding the stem. I've used two different petal shapes from the Petite Floral Potpourri die set (S3-420). 

The chipboard leaves are heat embossed with several colors of embossing powder in fall hues.

 
To add a bit of texture and sparkle, use soft matte gel to adhere Ice Resin Fire Opal Inclusions around the flowers. Any coordinating glitter bits you have would look wonderful.

I've also dangled a few green wire spirals for vine inspired texture and dimension.

Amazing Paper Grace October 2022 Die of the Month: 3D Poinsettia Surprise Envelope

When I think of Christmas flowers, poinsettias are the first thing that comes to mind. This fabulous Amazing Paper Grace October Die of the Month: 3D Poinsettia Surprise Envelope celebrates these blossoms with this fabulous 3D envelope box to fill with gorgeous Christmas poinsettias.

Tips and Techniques
The poinsettia dies in this set create perfectly beautiful blossoms. There are three sizes of petals that can be combined in any configuration to give a variety of flower sizes that can be paired with two different sizes of leaves that come in sets of two leaves cut individually (One die that cuts two of the same size leaf.) Most of my blossoms combine two large petal sections with one small petal section or two medium sections paired with one small section. There are a couple that use a large, medium, and small section. 

The first thing I did after cutting them out of beautiful 49 and Market papers, is to ink the edges in coordinating Distress Inks using a small toothbrush style applicator brush. Once inked, I cupped each petal from the back using a stylus, then turned them over and used a small stylus to cup just the end of each petal so it turned upward, then pressed down on the center of the petal section to finish forming to give each petal section a beautiful organic shape.

The green leaves are colored and shaped the same way, but of course since they are cut individually, the last step is not needed. 

The center berry section of each blossom is cut from dark teal patterned paper. I didn't want the white core of the paper to show, so used a coordinating dark teal green marker to edge the die cut berry sections. This step would be optional if you use a solid core paper, or don't mind the white edges showing. I placed them on a foam pad with the teal side up and cupped them with a stylus.

To put them together, I adhered the three petal sections together, offsetting each section. Poinsettias petals are not evenly offset in nature, so if you look at my blossoms, you'll see that they are not even either to get that organic feel of a natural poinsettia blossom. I assembled all the blossoms, then went back and glued two leaves to the back of each one. Once that was done, I adhered the berry section to each flower. 

I wanted to add berries so filled each hole with a prill using lighter teal prills on the lighter colored blossoms, and darker teal prills on the purple blossoms. I have a needle tip glue bottle filled with Distress Collage medium that I used to add a drop of adhesive to each hole, then used tweezers to drop a prill into each hole. This takes extra time, but I think the results are definitely worth the effort. 

This merry Christmas sentiment is cut in the same teal patterned paper as the background and lighter poinsettias, then backed with the purple used for the blossoms. 

It just happened that the paper I used had sweet little stamps printed across the bottom. I couldn't resist using one of them on the corner of my envelope. The darling French horn charm is from my stash, but any little Christmas charm would look darling here.

This shot is taken from an angle so you can see the layers of dimension a little better. This envelope is a 3D box with two inserts that allow you to adhere the blossoms at different levels. To increase the dimension even more, I adhered some of the blossoms with foam squares and for some of the blossoms, I even layered two foam squares to give the flowers more height. 

Because I used the foam tape, this card does not slide over to be put into an envelope, so will need a box or gift bag to give it to the recipient. If you do not use the foam tape, this 3D envelope slides over beautifully to tuck into an envelope.

The beautiful scrolled pieces are cut from metallic purple paper to catch the light and add a bit of glimmering bling. The tiny berries centered on the holy design on the envelope are also cut from this metallic paper. 

For those of you who have this fabulous die set, you might be wondering where that metallic curl above the sentiment came from? It's one of the discarded pieces left when cutting the scrolls. I just couldn't resist tucking it in here. 

The base of this box and the gift card envelope are cut from a dark teal cardstock. Before adding the inserts, I inked all the edges with distress ink.

The scrolled holly envelope inserts are cut from dark teal patterned paper and backed with the lighter teal which is actually the back of the dark teal paper. One 12 x 12 inch sheet was perfect to cut all the inserts and poinsettias used for the envelope and gift card. 

The inserts are adhered to the backgrounds then adhered to the envelope before assembling the envelope following the instructions with the die set. 

The sentiment was adhered first so I was sure to make room for it when added the flowers 

I laid out the flowers and scrolls to know where I wanted to place them, then adhered the scrolls first, then the blossoms. 

This envelope is actually the perfect size for a gift card, so I trimmed off the side edges leaving about 1/4 inch margin on each panel to adhere them together.

The die cut holly panels are glued together then adhered to the envelope before assembling. I scored the envelope flap about 1/16 " from the fold line on the inside towards the triangular flap to help it lay flat since the dimension of the envelope would keep it from closing. 

I cut a length of 1/8 inch wide red line tape the width of the envelope and adhered it to the back bottom of the front piece leaving the liner on the tape. Adhere the side flaps with a strong liquid glue. This lets you line everything up perfectly. Once dry, remove the backing on the red line tape, and the bottom is secure for adding your gift card. One of the metal scroll pieces is cut in half and tucked behind the two poinsettias that were left from making the 3D envelope. 

Now you have a perfectly coordinated and gorgeous 3D Christmas card and gift card envelope.
