Frosty Details ~ ScrapThat January Kit

When we lived in North Carolinas, a snow deep enough to play in was a rare event. Here is one of those times. The children and I built a snowman complete with hat, scarf, stone eyes, and carrot nose. We built him in the front yard and received many honks and thumbs up as we worked. This is one of those rare photos where I am out from behind the camera along with our youngest daughter, Maria. Such a fun day way back then. 

You saw this page during my ScrapThat! January Reveal, but I wanted to share some details. I had so much fun creating with the gorgeous ScrapThat! January kit!!

Tips and Techniques:

Crocheted Snowflakes ~ As you probably know I'm a life long crafter. So when I went to a crop recently, and one of the gals was teaching some beginning crochet skills, she found a snowflake pattern for me. I know the basic stitches, but tend to get stuck reading patterns. Alison helped me through the pattern, and once I got it, I kind of went crazy crocheting snowflakes. The large one with the button and the smaller one on the left of the photo topped with a rose are the same pattern, just different size crochet thread and hooks. I also made a crocheted snowflake ornament for each of our children for their trees by stiffening them and adding a hanger loop. The embellishment add-on kit contained the BoBunny Powder Mountain Buttons, so perfect to embellish this flake. You can go to Red Heart Yarn for the free pattern download for this snowflake. 

Altered Prima Flowers ~ The aqua Prima flowers in the FAO Kit were a bit bright for this page, so I spritzed them with sapphire glimmer mist and then edged with the white chalk ink included in the kit. I also used my round nose pliers to open them up and roll the petals back. While most everything on this page is from the kit or handcrafted, the Prima "US" bulb is from my personal stash. 

Inking ~ The base paper behind the punched edges is the Sugar Double Dot paper which is white. I applied several layers of distress ink to get the graded color below the border punched edges. 

White Fabric Flowers ~ These flowers are easy to make. Just cut out circles of sheer fabric - each circle a little larger. They don't need to be perfect - just rough cut. Then melt the edges slightly over a tea light candle flame. A pair of tweezers helps keep your fingers from getting too hot. As the edges melt, the fabric forms a cupped shape. Just put a dab of glue in the center of each circle and glue together. Once dry, I used my hole piercer to put a hole in the center to pull the stamens through. Pull the stamen cords to one side and adhere with a dab of glue. Trim off the excess. Once dry you can arrange the stamens. I used 5 for each flower. These gorgeous stamens came in the kit. and I knew they would be just perfect for these flowers. 

Modeling Paste Flourish ~ I mixed micro beads into the modeling paste before applying it over the stencil, then while wet sprinkled some more on top for some nice texture and shimmer. 

Embossing Powder Snow ~ Stampendous Fran-tage has some amazing embossing powders and mica flakes. I sprinkled a mixture across the page and heat set from below. 

Handcrafted Rose/Crochet Snowflake ~ A close-up of the smaller hand crocheted snowflake with one of my roses created with the Donna Salazar Bitty Blossoms Spellbinder dies. I used the Denim Dot paper and inked with the white chalk ink included in the kit. 

Embossed Snowflake ~ I punched this snowflake, applied clear embossing ink and covered with Ranger holographic embossing powder. While still hot, I sprinkled more powder on and heated again until I had layered on three coats of powder. 

Buttons ~ I layered on the BoBunny buttons from the kit and clustered with the snowflake buttons. I also added some of the BoBunny Jewel rhinestones from the EAO Kit.

"Mother" ~ ScrapThat! Dec. Kit ~

I'm here with another Christmasy layout. Our son, Joseph, and his beautiful Rachel were married last December with the church and reception filled with lovely Christmas decor, so this Christmas themed kit worked perfectly for a wedding page. This is one of the rare pages including a photo of myself. Part of their wedding ceremony included coming down and giving each of the mothers a rose with an opportunity for me to bless them on their new life together. I'm so glad the photographer got a shot of this special moment. 

Today I would like to share the details of my layout using the

December ScrapThat! Kit.

Main Kit with Amy's December Sketch

Here is Amy's gorgeous sketch:

December is a busy month, so we have extended our ScrapThat! Sketch Challenge. You have until December 30 to enter your sketch project. Anyone can enter, and kit products are not required. Details can be found in our forum. 

Tips and Techniques:

Flowers ~ The focal red poppy and white poinsettia are gorgeous flowers included in the main kit. I inked the bright white poinsettia to fit with the vintage feel of the page. I also did a bit of inking to the smaller green poinsettia. I used the kit cardstock to create the roses using my Donna Salazar Bitty Blossoms Spellbinders die set. I just love the flowers this die set creates. This gorgeous bow is also in the main kit and so easy to add such a lovely touch to my page. 

Leaves ~ There were 3 of the small green holly leaves in the kit, but I wanted more, so used one as a template to cut several from the kit cardstock. With a bit of inking and pinching, they look just like the originals.

Wire ~ I just adore the wired balls that came in the kit. I wasn't sure how I would use them at first, but discovered that when looped and twisted they were perfect for my clusters. 

Modeling Paste Stem ~ I found a lovely leafy stencil in the paint section of a local craft store, and it was so perfect for this page. I used some distress re-inker to tint the modeling paste without watering it down too much to get the lovely dark green color. I added a few pearls colored with cranberry alcohol ink for the berries. 

Bells ~ Have I mentioned lately how much I enjoy playing with Chipboard. My friend, Dana, posted a review on our ScrapThat! forum about Sophisticated Finishes products. I just had to try them out on this bell using the copper and patina. First you paint on the metallic color and when nearly dry but still tacky add the patina green which actually reacts with the copper to get the verdigris effect. You'll definitely be seeing more of this product on future projects!! The bow and holly were colored with Copics and Spica markers, then gold paint rubbed lightly over the red bow. 

Corrugated Board ~ Corrugated board is another of my favorites. Here I applied another new to me product - white opaque flakes, then painted with gesso, stamped with a script, inked then more opaque flakes. The opaque flakes are white in a medium that dries clear, and I realize once I painted over them, that while the texture was there, I lost a lot of the visual impact of the flakes. That's why I applied them again as a final step. If you are looking to try this technique out, you could skip the first step and just apply them on top. 

Heat Embossing ~ I'm always looking to my stamps to see if I can find one to work as a title or sentiment. This one was perfect for my page title. Because I wanted it to pop, I heat embossed it with gold embossing powder.

"Amore" ~ ScrapThat! Nov. Kit & BITW "Winter" Challenge

Hi everyone. I can't believe how fast November is flying by. Our US Thanksgiving is just over a week away, so it's time to be thankful for all the amazing people our Lord has brought into my life and the many blessings that have come my way. I hope that you have some wonderful blessings to reflect upon as well. 

Today I would like to share some close-up shots and details for this layout I created with the fabulous ScrapThat! November Kit, Flower Add-On Kit, and Embellishment Add-On Kit. Do you ever go back and tweak your layouts after you finish them? I don't tweak often, but if you notice a couple changes here from my previous blog hop/reveal post, you are quite astute. I misted the white kit flowers and tucked the door behind my banner. :-)

Our son and his lovely bride on their December 2011 wedding day during their private vows. Our son's vows were more like a book - three pages of them. I pray that he continues to treat Rachel like the precious gift she is for many years to come. 

"Amore"

The current Bird of the Word challenge is to use one or more of these words: winter, spring, summer, and/or fall. Under the key are the words "Winter Wedding." Joseph and Rachel were married in December with the church and reception decorated for their lovely winter wedding!! 

Techniques:

Fussy Cutting ~ The leafy vines and scalloped banner pieces were fussy cut from the gorgeous Bo Bunny Serenade papers. 

Pleated Ribbon ~ I pleated the length of white ribbon and adhered with bits of super sticky red backed tape. I used Hercules Tape, but any of the red backed varieties would work. I then cut out the solid center of the doily and adhered the pleated ribbon strip around the inside doily edge. 

Prima Door ~ No technique here, but what a great kit piece to work with!! I love how this looks next to the photo!! 

Handcrafted Flowers ~ I used a couple new dies for rolled flowers for the handcrafted flowers: Donna Salazar's Spellbinder Bitty Blossoms, and the Tim Holz Sizzix Tattered Pinecone - which also makes a wonderful rose. I inked the edges before rolling and forming the flowers. 

Distress Stickles ~ I fussy cut this dragonfly, then painted distress stickles across the wings and body. A couple mini rhinestones were alcohol inked for the eyes. I love using EK Success Honey Bee scissors for my fussy cutting. 

Misting ~ I used the remainder of my white kit flowers, but they stuck out a bit much among the yellow/brown flowers, so a couple of quick spritzes with some brown glimmer mist, was the perfect remedy. Aren't these crystal encrusted prima leaves gorgeous!! No need to mist these beauties.  

Inking ~ The yellow Bo Bunny Serenade paper was quite bright, so I toned it down by applying some burlap Distress Ink. 

Modeling Paste ~ There are so many fun things you can do with modeling paste!! Here I used it with a stencil to create my title. 

Alcohol Ink ~ The little metal dragonfly was an antiqued metal piece in my stash. I used a paint brush to apply some orange alcohol ink to the wings and brown on the body. 

Flourishes ~ This was an easy way to bring some weight to my smaller title. The paper flourish was die cut and a similar Zva Creative pearl flourish placed over the paper one. 

Distressing ~ Of course I used my handy Donna Salazar Distrezz-It-All by Zutter to distress all the straight edges!!

Love of My Life ~ Tips and Techniques: ScrapThat! October Kit

I'm back with more tips and techniques this morning from my Love of My Live layout created using the fabulous ScrapThat! October Kit. The photo on this page is Elizabeth and Andrew's favorite shot from their engagement photos.

Tips and Techniques:

Twine Flowers ~ I created the twine flower from jute twine. My tutorial for these flowers can be found here.

Handcrafted Flower ~ I created the pink flower with Donna Salazar's Grand Peony die set, and added one of the kit pearls to the center.

Wood Flower ~ I used a rock salt, mist, crackle technique on the wood flower. I'll be posting a photo tutorial on this technique next month.

Altered Ticket ~ I liked the hand on this ticket, but wanted different words to go with my layout, so I painted around the hand with gesso, inked the edges with black soot Distress Ink, and hand wrote "True Love."

Torn Edge ~ I tucked in the prima wood clock behind the torn edge. 

Drip ~ I put a blob of gesso below the torn edge and tapped my paper to encourage the drip to form, then placed a flower created with the Donna Salazar Rose Creations die set at the top of the drip. 

Scalloped Circle ~ This was so easy peasy. I cut a border strip, then snipped each of the scallops and arranged them around the layered circles, adhering each piece as I went.

Swirled Twine ~ I adore the look of something swirling across my page and through the flower clusters, dots of glue hold the twine in place. 

Colored, Stenciled, Modeling Paste ~ I spread the modeling paste over my stencil, allowed to dry, then used Distress Markers to color. I also used this technique in the bottom corner for my title and above the scalloped circle without the color for the phrase "I adore you!"

Hand Stitching ~ I used a circle template by In Stitch'z to pierce the stitching holes in my layered circles.

You Mean the World to Me ~ May Arts/Helmar September Challenge - Ink It!

I hope each of you is having a lovely week. It is fall here in Ohio, and I am enjoying the lovely trees as the leaves turn brilliant hues of yellow, red, and orange. Gary and I took a drive this afternoon to take in the gorgeous colors. 

I had such a wonderful time working with my May Arts ribbons and Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive. I started out with an assortment of gorgeous May Arts ribbons all in white/ivory. The challenge was to color them to use in a project. Their products take color beautifully!! Here is my take on the challenge with a layout featuring a photo of Elizabeth and Andrew in front of the church where their reception was held on their wedding day. I used the remainder of my October ScrapThat! Kit with some additional Prima flowers and architectural metal frame. 

The May Arts products I selected to use include: Frayed Flowers - white, Faux Suede Leaves - ivory, Solid Canvas Ribbon - ivory, and Net Ribbon - ivory. And of course I used the Helmar 450 glue. I have always preferred tape over glue for most of my scrapbooking, but in this project I used mostly the glue. I also used some Helmar V2 Vellum Adhesive to adhere the Net Ribbon and Helmar Scrap Dots under some of the flowers where part of the flower was on the raised cardboard and I needed some extra height under the rest of the flower.

When I saw this sketch posted on Sketches With A Twist, I knew it would be perfect for the Ink It Challenge with all the flowers and ribbons. The twist is to include stars in one way or another. Mine are stamped below the long grey paper strip. 

Techniques:

Frayed Flowers ~ I fussy cut the flowers which came stitched to a length of sheer ribbon. I then misted the pink with Tattered Angels glimmer mist and the blue with some home made glimmer mist I had in my stash. I then went back with a darker mist for the centers, but rather than spritzing it on, I put a few drops into a small bowl and painted the flower centers to darken them up. When dry, I brushed on some gesso to give a more shabby feel. Finally I added some jeweled flower brads to the center of each Frayed Flower. I alcohol inked the gem centers to coordinate with the misted flowers.  

Canvas Ribbon ~ For the title ribbon, I cut a piece long enough for my title and misted with Tattered Angels glimmer mist. I crinkled it into a ball and let it sit until dry to get the wrinkled, distressed look. Once dry, I laid my template across the ribbon and smoothed flexible modeling paste over the stencil. The brown ribbons were colored and crinkled in the same manner, but no modeling paste. 

Faux Suede Leaves ~ These leaves took the misted color so beautifully. I then went back with distress ink to darken the edges and center of each leaf for added visual interest. 

Net Ribbon ~ I dyed this ribbon by spritzing with a color mist. Using a piece of scalloped edge paper as a template, I fussy cut the net ribbon into scallops. 

Hand Stitching ~ done around the center mat.

Distressing ~ I distressed all the edges using my Donna Salazar Distrezz-It-All. 

Modeling Paste ~ In addition to using modeling paste for the title, I used a stencil and modeling paste on the top mat. 

Corrugated Board ~ I tore a scrap from a cardboard box for my photo mat. I used a foam brush to apply gesso to the board. 

Fussy Cutting ~ The Prima paper had a lovely corner that I cut and tucked the photo into.

Stamping ~ I used the lighter Pumice Stone Distress Ink to stamp the words Hand in Hand at the bottom corner and for the strip of stars. 

Glue ~ This Helmar 450 glue was amazing. I used it to glue everything from paper and flowers to ribbon. The only thing that wasn't quite successful was using the glue on the doily which was a bit delicate for the glue. Where the glue showed through the doily paper, I placed the title ribbon over top. Problem averted!! This glue worked perfectly to adhere the metal frame to the photo!!

Step 1. You might be wondering how I punched a coffee filter. I experimented and tried layering the coffee filter over top of a piece of card stock and it punched perfectly. Don't worry that the coffee filter is wavy. We will be misting and scrunching, so that doesn't matter. If you don't have this particular punch, most any little round tipped 5 petal flower punch should work.

Step 2. I use two punched flowers per blossom. Once you get all of your blossoms punched, stack them in groups of 6 or 8. With your scissors, take a small v shaped snip out of each petal. Don't worry if they are exactly centered or exactly the same on each petal. In nature, they are varied and different, besides we are going to scrunch these up.

Step 3. Lightly spritz with water. Place the piercing tool in the center of a blossom and crinkle the blossom around the tool as shown. I don't pierce a hole at this point, but if it does pierce, that's OK since we're going to pierce a hole later for the stamins. Do this to each of your blossoms. 

Step 4. Take each bunched and crinkled blossom and swipe the cut edges against the top of the Worn Lipstick (or color of your choice) ink pad. Be sure to get some ink on all of the petal edges, but just a little. It doesn't matter if your petals are dry or still damp. 

Step 5. Lightly spritz each blossom. This will lighten and spread the ink. The misting may kind of flatten your blossom out, so crinkle it back up like before. You probably don't need to use the piercing tool this time. Set aside to dry or if you are impatient like me, place back on the piercing tool and use your heat tool to dry, being careful not to singe or burn. Here is what the petals will look like after misting, drying and carefully opening. See how the color softens and spreads!

Step 6. Add Stamins. Place two blossoms on top of each other and adjust so you can see both sets of petals. (not stacked directly on top of each other). Use a piercing tool or other sharp pointed object to pierce a small hole in the center of each blossom. Stamins generally come with a ball on each end of a cord. Snip these in half. You will need 6 pieces for each flower (or whatever looks good to you). Put the stem ends through the center of the flower like this. 

Now turn the flower over and put a dot of glossy accents or other quick drying glue in the center on the back side. Once dry you can clip off the excess stems. 

Step 7. Curl your petals. I used a piercing tool and curled the center petals a little tighter than the back ones.

Mom ~ DT Reveal ScrapFIT Workout #68 Misty's Mist Mania

The new Challenge posted today at ScrapFIT is to use Mist. I was so excited to see this fun challenge. I added to the fun by personally challenging myself to use mist in three ways on this page. First, I misted over my modeling paste mask using a homemade color mist topped with some glimmer mist and metallic paint. Second, I misted the chipboard pieces under my butterfly. I have posted a tutorial for this technique. Just scroll down this post to find it. And finally, the fussy cut title, Mom, was rubbed with several colors of Distress Ink and then lightly misted with water to give the distressed, mottled look.

In 2000 we moved back to Ohio to be closer to our families. This photo was taken on the spot where our home was to be built. Motherhood is a precious privilege and responsibility. I was inspired by the challenge over at Once Upon A Sketch to scrap and journal about being a mom. 

Workout #68 - Missy's Mist Mania

If you are regular here at ScrapFIT you must have noticed our wonderful Weekend Warm Up Coach, Missy's, love of MISTING! Missy does amazing things with mist including making it herself! So this Workout is a tribute to Missy! We want to see a layout or project with a good amount of misting! Be creative, make your own misting mask, mix your mist colors - think outside the box!

We are so fortunate to have Vicky Alberto sponsoring both of our workouts this month!!

This Prima paper with the quotation in the top corner was so perfect to convey how I feel about mothering our precious children. I also used the Prima butterfly, hanging trinkets, resin piece and brick stamp. 

I bought the Donna Salazar Sprocket die set last week and couldn't wait to use it. I found this great earring finding that looked like gears and it fit perfectly into the center of the die cut. I placed the rhinestones around the sprocket for some added bling. 





I wrote out Isaiah 41:43 along the bottom of my page. As a mom, it has always been important to convey this message to our children. 

The mask for my modeling paste was cut from the Tim Holtz Sizzix Washer Border die from heavy cardstock.

Misted Puffy Paint Chipboard Tutorial

Supply List:

Chipboard (Want2Scrap Chipboard corner flourish)

White Puffy Paint

White Acrylic Paint

Assorted Mists

Heat Tool

Not Pictured ~ 

Heat Resistant Craft Mat

Sand Paper and/or Precision Files

Large Butterfly (Prima ~ Butterfly Kiss, Moulin Rouge)

Step One: Sand any rough edges on chipboard. Trim if necessary. (I trimmed off the long spikes leaving the butterfly wing shapes.)

Step Two: Squeeze out a THICK layer of puffy paint onto the entire chipboard piece. Be sure to completely cover from edge to edge. 

Step Three: Once the puffy paint has been applied, let this set for about an hour. 

Step Four: Use your heat tool to puff up the paint. Be sure to aim the heat tool on the top and sides of the puffy paint to get as much bubbled texture as possible. I hold the heat tool pretty close to the puffy paint and the edges turn a delightful toasted marshmallow color. 

Step Five: I didn't want my brown chipboard edges showing, so I went back and painted them with white acrylic paint. If you are not going for the toasted marshmallow look you can paint the entire piece. If you want textured chipboard without the mist, paint the entire piece with the color(s) of your choice. 

Step Six: Mist your puffy painted chipboard piece(s). I used a combination of homemade color mist (water and distress re-inkers), Perfect Pearl Mist, Smooch Spritz, Art Co. Metallic Mist, and Glimmer Mist. Depending on the look you are going for, you could use fewer (even one) mists or more. 

Acrylic paint tends to act as a resist to water based color products so your mist will bead up and look mottled, which is the distressed look I was going for. While the mist is wet, you don't want to blot or touch it, or the mist will wipe off. Of course, if you end up with too much of a certain color in the wrong spot, you can dab it with a paper towel to remove the excess, so have fun playing with your mists. When I got the look I wanted, I used my heat tool to dry the mist. Once dry, it is set and does not rub off. 

Now you can arrange your chipboard on your page or card. I spread mine like butterfly wings and centered a gorgeous Prima butterfly on top.

Use it Tuesday: All about mom. The corner crystal flourish has been in my stash for over 2 years. The black brads, modeling paste, rhinestones, and punches have been in my stash for over a year. **
