Shabby Butterfly Cards with Adorned Theo Butterflies VIDEO TUTORIAL ~ Scraps of Elegance January Kit

Scraps of Elegance Kit subscribers are in for a real treat with the Creativity Add On this month. Melinda included two wonderful butterfly dies including this Theo Butterfly by Poppystamps (a division of Memory Box). 

In my video I show a variety of different ways to adorn this sweet butterfly. I've created two shabby chic cards featuring the butterflies along with items from the kit and add ons.

I've use the gorgeous Blue Fern Studios Blush collection papers found in the Main Kit, along with Prima flowers and chipboard for both cards.

I simply inked the butterfly body and added a tiny rose from a previous kit to the center of the Adorned Theo Butterfly. The sequins are included in the Prima Chipboard pack.

I adhered the Creativity Add On Prima Pearl Glass Glitter to the larger flowers.

The main kit includes the sweetest Prima chipboard pack!!

I stenciled the vines using The Crafter's Workshop Tuscan Sun Stencil by Gabrielle Pollacco found in the Main Kit.

The sweet heart doily is included in the Main Kit.

I centered this butterfly with a Buttons Galore Fancy Heart button found in the Main Kit. Of course, I had to paint it with gesso and then highlighted with the pigment powder "paint" I had mixed up for the butterfly wings. Don't you just adore how the microbeads pop on the butterfly wings?

The wooden hearts from the main kit are decorated with pigment powder paint, stamping, and edged with microbeads.

The larger flowers are again sprinkled with Prima Pearl Glass Glitter. Around the cluster, I adhered a mixture of silver glass glitter (from my stash) along with the Prima Blush Microbeads.

I've added the stenciled brick background with The Crafter's Workshop Tuscan Sun Stencil by Gabrielle Pollacco.

Unforgettable Memories in the Making for Really Reasonable Ribbon

Our children grow up all too quickly. This photo was taken about 16 years ago and our children are now all grown. Where does the time go? When we lived in North Carolina, we often vacationed at Morrow Mountain Park. We would rent a cabin for the week. Joseph and Gary would often spend the day fishing while the girls and I would hike around the trails. Here Joseph, Elizabeth, and Maria are climbing on some fallen trees. 

I've created this page featuring Really Reasonable Ribbon and a sketch from the September Dusty Attic Challenge. Bonnie at RRR has a wonderful selection of natural fiber ribbons, lace, and is now carrying Wild Orchid Craft Mulberry Flowers.

Tips and Techniques

A mixed cluster of flowers. I often purchase white or cream colors so that I can ink them to coordinate with my layout as I did here. From the Really Reasonable Ribbon Store, I've included the Open Rose, Cosmos Daisy, and Cottage Rose - all in white. These flowers are so perfect to nestle in among other flowers in my stash. I hand crocheted the layer under the open rose. 

Another view of this cluster. Here you can also see the gorgeous Burlap Woven Ribbon. Rather than using a length of this ribbon, I cut sections of it and pulled it apart at one end to tuck into my clusters for added dimension and interest. Here you can also see some of my stamping, border punching, and machine stitched border. 

I stamped and embossed my title, then inked the background paper. The embossing acts as a resist. The cluster to the right includes a Sweetheart Rose, Cosmos Daisy, and more of the Burlap Woven Ribbon. 

This butterfly die-cut was included in the paper collection I used. I painted Distress Stickles across the wings.

I painted up this Dusty Attic Vine Frame with metallic paints, then shaded with distress markers. Distress stickles were brushed on the outer frame to add texture. 

This DA wicker fence was embellished with Sweetheart Blossoms. I painted it and added the woodgrain with a marker. 

This DA Grass Cluster was painted with golds and greens, then I added microbeads to the seed head.

"Amore" ~ ScrapThat! Nov. Kit & BITW "Winter" Challenge

Hi everyone. I can't believe how fast November is flying by. Our US Thanksgiving is just over a week away, so it's time to be thankful for all the amazing people our Lord has brought into my life and the many blessings that have come my way. I hope that you have some wonderful blessings to reflect upon as well. 

Today I would like to share some close-up shots and details for this layout I created with the fabulous ScrapThat! November Kit, Flower Add-On Kit, and Embellishment Add-On Kit. Do you ever go back and tweak your layouts after you finish them? I don't tweak often, but if you notice a couple changes here from my previous blog hop/reveal post, you are quite astute. I misted the white kit flowers and tucked the door behind my banner. :-)

Our son and his lovely bride on their December 2011 wedding day during their private vows. Our son's vows were more like a book - three pages of them. I pray that he continues to treat Rachel like the precious gift she is for many years to come. 

"Amore"

The current Bird of the Word challenge is to use one or more of these words: winter, spring, summer, and/or fall. Under the key are the words "Winter Wedding." Joseph and Rachel were married in December with the church and reception decorated for their lovely winter wedding!! 

Techniques:

Fussy Cutting ~ The leafy vines and scalloped banner pieces were fussy cut from the gorgeous Bo Bunny Serenade papers. 

Pleated Ribbon ~ I pleated the length of white ribbon and adhered with bits of super sticky red backed tape. I used Hercules Tape, but any of the red backed varieties would work. I then cut out the solid center of the doily and adhered the pleated ribbon strip around the inside doily edge. 

Prima Door ~ No technique here, but what a great kit piece to work with!! I love how this looks next to the photo!! 

Handcrafted Flowers ~ I used a couple new dies for rolled flowers for the handcrafted flowers: Donna Salazar's Spellbinder Bitty Blossoms, and the Tim Holz Sizzix Tattered Pinecone - which also makes a wonderful rose. I inked the edges before rolling and forming the flowers. 

Distress Stickles ~ I fussy cut this dragonfly, then painted distress stickles across the wings and body. A couple mini rhinestones were alcohol inked for the eyes. I love using EK Success Honey Bee scissors for my fussy cutting. 

Misting ~ I used the remainder of my white kit flowers, but they stuck out a bit much among the yellow/brown flowers, so a couple of quick spritzes with some brown glimmer mist, was the perfect remedy. Aren't these crystal encrusted prima leaves gorgeous!! No need to mist these beauties.  

Inking ~ The yellow Bo Bunny Serenade paper was quite bright, so I toned it down by applying some burlap Distress Ink. 

Modeling Paste ~ There are so many fun things you can do with modeling paste!! Here I used it with a stencil to create my title. 

Alcohol Ink ~ The little metal dragonfly was an antiqued metal piece in my stash. I used a paint brush to apply some orange alcohol ink to the wings and brown on the body. 

Flourishes ~ This was an easy way to bring some weight to my smaller title. The paper flourish was die cut and a similar Zva Creative pearl flourish placed over the paper one. 

Distressing ~ Of course I used my handy Donna Salazar Distrezz-It-All by Zutter to distress all the straight edges!!

Thank You Card

I hope you have had a wonderful week. I've had a very nice one. Two of our daughters have moved into a new apartment. A very happy event for me - a much safer location and only 30 minutes away instead of an hour. DH and I went out to welcome them to their new place today and got them a new gas grill. I hope they have many lovely times gathered with friends to use it. 

Now I have a card creation to share with you:

I created this thank you note using some yummy Donna Salazar Artistic Papers. They are printed on water color paper and hold up so well to mixed media techniques like water color pencils used here. 

Techniques:

Color Work ~ The flowers and leaves were colored using Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils, then blended with water. Once dry, I used a fine tip paint brush to lightly apply stickles to highlight areas on the flowers. 

Tag - This Tag was fussy cut from one of Donna's Art Paper sheets. I used Archival ink to stamp the sentiment image, then rubbed several colors of Distress Ink over top. 

I used the Tim Holtz Distress tool and Distress Ink on the edges. The lace is some I had purchased at JoAnn's and rubbed some Distress ink over it to soften the bright white. 

I used the Alterations Movers and Shapers Mini Butterfly die along with paint, distress ink, rhinestones, and covered wire to create this sweet butterfly.
