On Target Mixed Media Layout for Once Upon A..Sketch Featuring Leaky Shed Studio Chipboard

Happy New Year!!
May 2014 bring you and yours many sweet blessings.

It's reveal day at Once Upon A..Sketch.

There are a couple changes for our 2014 Challenges. First, we will be having two reveals each month with half of our amazing DT revealing their inspiration on the 1st with the rest revealed on the 15th. Second, you will have until the end of each month to enter your projects!!

Our son issued a challenge to me a while back when he asked if it was possible to create a page without any flowers. So, I took a decidedly masculine approach for this layout and gasp - no flowers.

Now, here's my take on the January OUAS challenge.

"On Target"

Journaling Theme ~ "Lesson Learnt' . . ."

You are free to interpret our theme any way you like, but please make sure your layout is based on the sketch below and includes some journaling (hidden journaling is fine ~ please tell us where it is located).

I flipped the sketch for my layout.

Tips and Techniques
I used gorgeous Kaisercraft Basecoat paper and Leaky Shed Studio Chipboard Gears. I painted the gears black and used my heat tool while wet to bubble and distress. I rubbed Grecian Gold Rub'n Buff then copper metallic pant over the bubbled raised areas to took like rusty metal.

This paper has such a gorgeous distressed look, but I added a bit more by splattering black paint across the page. To embellish, I chopped up May Arts Black Webbing, vinyl screening, punchinella, and chicken wire. The title is handwritten, and I've doodled arrows around my journaling.

I have to thank my friend, Mandy who gave me the punchinella, vinyl screening (below the photo), and chicken wire (next to the photo).

One of my Christmas presents was a fabulous fountain pen (thanks, mom!!). I used it for my handwritten journaling which reads: Inspiration comes from many places. For your high school science fair projects it came from archery. How fun to learn lessons from a sport you still continue to enjoy.

The photo mat is stenciled with more of the copper metallic paint as well as roughly painting the photo edges. I've also used this paint on the punchinella to edge the top and bottom of my layout. A bit of black paint was rubbed lightly onto the painted punchinella.

"Sledding" ~ ScrapThat! Dec. Kit ~

When you live in North Carolina and come to Ohio for the holidays, your children are dreaming of a white Christmas. Joseph got his wishes with a big snow fitting for an afternoon of sledding on one of those trips. The driving range near my husband's parents home has this large hill that brings out many of the small town's children to enjoy the slippery snow. Yes, this is the same son featured in yesterdays wedding post, so you know this was taken just a few years ago.

Today I would like to share the details of my layout using the

"Sledding"
Main, EAO, and FAO kits

 Tips and Techniques

Flower Cluster ~ I used these gorgeous flowers from the main and FAO kits to create a cluster. The twine flower was created with the kit's red baker's twin using my twine flower tutorial, which can be found here.  I also curled some of the paper ribbon to tuck in among the flowers.

Found Objects ~ I have a stash of chicken wire from my friends, Barb and Mandy. It's authentic - straight from the barn and had actually been used in a chicken coop. This summer, my mom raided her jewelry box for items she no longer wears. This dangle earring was one of those items.

Paper Snowflakes ~ The snowflakes were cut from white cardstock using my Gazelle and Martha Stewart punches borrowed from a friend. I then heat embossed three layers of holographic embossing powder to give them the glittery sparkle.

Metal Snowflakes ~ The main kit contains these sweet metal snowflakes - three white, and three silver. The silver got lost on my background paper, so a quick coat of white acrylic made them pop like the others.

Chipboard Horn ~ I used a more simple technique here - a couple coats of metallic paint - gold for the horn and red for the bow.

Fussy Cutting ~ The berry sprigs and pine tree were cut from the gorgeous Kaisercaft Turtle Dove papers.

Buckle Frame ~ I thought the main kit Santa Buckle would make a great frame. I had a printing mishap and ended up with three of the same photo, marred in different spots. By layering and framing, I was able to use all three.

Twine Tucks ~ To fill in my clusters, I wired loops of jute twine and secured the wire under my clustered embellishments.

Distressing ~ I used my favorite distressing tool on all the straight edges, my Donna Salazar Distrezz-It-All by Zutter.

Love ~ Donna Salazar June Sketch Challenge

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!! I've taken some stuff to a friend's home for a garage sale and have been blessed to stay cool enough in this hot weather. I actually took my scrappy stuff with me today to work on this layout for a challenge over at Donna Salazar's blog. I just adore working with Donna's amazing products so this was a fun layout to create. I'm a Girlie Grunge gal at heart!

Our daughter, Elizabeth was recently engaged to Andrew, and we are looking forward to adding our new son to the family in October. Here is one of the engagement shots I took on Memorial Day.

Here is the sketch by Mistra for Donna's June Challenge:

Techniques:

Focal Flower ~ This was created with one of my hand loomed twine flowers and you can find my tutorial for them here. I popped an adhesive backed pearl by Want2Scrap in the center. The background petals were created with Donna's amazing dies - Grand Peony and Carnation Creations. I used muslin, tulle, and coordinating paper. To cut tulle and fabric, cut a piece of scrap cardstock a little larger than the die. Layer the fabric between the paper and the die, and it will cut right through the fabric. When I cut the fabric without the cardstock, there were quite a few uncut sections. This was corrected when I cut it with the cardstock.

Distressing ~ I recently purchased Donna's Distrezz-It-All. This is an amazing tool and has already saved me hours of hand distressing in the couple weeks I've been using it. All the the straight edges and my photo here were distrezzed. The circles were hand distressed and then inked.

Ruffled Circle Edge ~ I punched strips of coordinating paper and trimmed them to 1 inch wide. I dampened the paper and put a small pleat at each design repeat, creating curved strips that easily edged my circles. I added a bit of Distress Ink on the edges.

Lace Slots ~ I saw this technique done on one of Mistra's projects and knew it would be perfect here. Simply fold your paper and distress on the fold creating a wonderful little opening to tuck some lace into.

Hand Stitching ~ I drew curvy looped lines around the edges of my large mats, used my hole piercer to pierce evenly spaced holes, then used a back stitch with two strands of embroidery floss.

Corrugated Butterflies ~ I used Donna's Corrugated Board by Zutter for my butterflies. I've had a lot of comments about my butterfies, so be watching for a tutorial for them to be posted soon.

Stamping ~ I used Donna's Crackle and Lace Corner stamps on the mat behind the photo. I first used the crackle with Seedless Preserves Distress Ink and then used brown Archival ink for the Lace Corner. I distrezzed the edge after stamping.

Chicken Wire and Burlap ~ I love the contrast of girlie and grungy elements, so the real chicken wire and loose weave burlap were used to give that grungy feel.

Donna Salazar Products Used:
Botanique Paper Stack
Grand Peony Die
Carnation Creations Die
Distrezz-It-All
Zutter Corrugated Board
