"True Love Stories" ScrapThat! Details & Prima BAP

Hi everyone. We are having a couple rare warm January days here in Ohio. It reached the low 60's yesterday and is expected to reach those temps again today before dropping back to normal freezing temps tomorrow. I don't even mind the accompanying rain.

I wanted to share some of the details from my "True Love Stories" page from the February ScrapThat! kit. I have to admit, as much as I enjoyed creating each of my pages, this was my favorite this month. I was so happy with the dreamy effect of the mixed media background. Originally I was going to do some more textured stenciling over the misted gesso, but in a rare move for me decided less was more this time. ;-)

I turned the Prima BAP Sketch for my design inspiration:

Tips and Techniques:

Resin Cherub ~ Aren't the Prima Cherubs in the EAO kit darling? I rubbed distress ink onto the bird, robe, and cheeks to add just a tiny bit of color, then rubbed the wings and hair with some Viva Inka gold rubbing compound. 

Chipboard ~ I painted the leafy chipboard flourish, then inked the edges before using a permanent marker to doodle the leaf veins. 

Fiber ~ I colored a narrow gauze strip from my stash and tucked it around the cluster. 

Prima Darlings ~ The FAO kit contained these gorgeous Prima flowers and I added the sweet glass heart charm from my stash. The centers of my hand crafted roses are also Prima crystals from my stash. 

Butterfly ~ I used the Donna Salazar/Spellbinders Wonderful Wings die to cut this sweet butterfly from a scrap of paper. I lightly inked the edges and added this charm from a package in inexpensive clearanced heart charms I picked up a while back. 

Mixed Media Background ~ This was actually quite easy to accomplish. I spread a thin layer of gesso over the center of the page with a credit card, leaving some grooves and texture. When dry, I came back and misted with Tattered Angels Cork, in some places a bit heavier and in others with a lighter misting. In the heavier areas I also spritzed on just a little water so that when I tapped the page, I got the beautiful little drips. Next to the photos I stamped the vines with a retired Prima Build a Frame stamp. I wanted the vine strips to blend into the background, so used Distress ink, which gives a somewhat distressed and mottled image when used on clear stamps. Hint ~ once the mixed media work is done, the page can be somewhat warped. I find that if I very lightly mist the back with water, place beween paper towels, then lay a large glass mat on top stacked with a pile of heavy books and let it sit over night, it is much flatter the next morning. Also use thin layers of media and dry completely before adding the next layer or you can get major warping that no amount of "pressing" can flatten. 

Extending Your Paper ~ I've mentioned it before, but you can get so much mileage from one sheet of paper. After distressing, I trimmed out only about an inch around the page for the border and used the inside for all my die cut embellishments and handcrafted flowers/leaves. It is much easier to distress the edge of an intact sheet of paper, than trying to distress after it has been trimmed down. (Ask me how I know!!) ;-)

Heart Die Cut ~ This heart piece was trimmed out of one of the hangers from my Spellbinders Elegant Posts Dies. 

Sweet Open Roses ~ The tutorial for these sweet little roses can be found here. I used the crystals rather than the stamen and no gesso. 

Leaves ~ One of my favorite ways to add texture to my clusters is to cut leaves from my paper scraps, fold them down the center and pinch creases where natural veins would lie on them. Then a bit of inking highlights that texture. 

Distressing ~ The mat and photo as well as page edges were distressed with my Donna Salazar/Zutter Distrezz-It-All. You really can use any distressing tool or even the sharp edges of your scissors, but this handy tool gives the thick edges so quickly. 

Heart Flourish ~ These KaiserCraft wood heart flourishes in the EAO kit are so sweet and can be added to a cluster or as photo corners. I painted this one with gesso, stamped with a script image, then lightly inked. 

Title ~ I have a set of love stamps by Cloud 9 that I have used over and over with the wedding and engagement photos I've been scrapping. A simple paper scrap is easily transformed to a beautiful title/sentiment with some embossing powder and a heat tool. The gold embossing really has so much dimension that doesn't quite show up in the photo.

"Live Life Beautifully" Birthday Card for SOUS Sketch Challenge

It's hard to believe that January is nearly over already. I'm so happy that the daylight is getting longer each day now.

Our oldest daughter has a birthday coming up, so I created a card for her inspired by the SOUS January 16 Card Sketch. She loved the vintage anniversary card that I created for my husband last summer, so I dug out my BoBunny Weekend Market paper. This is one of my all time favorite collections by BoBunny!! One of the SOUS challenges was to use scraps on your card, so other than my card base and a couple pieces of NoteWorthy, all of my papers are scraps from previous projects, even the flowers.

Vintage Finds ~ Grace loves keys and loves to write with fountain pens. This gorgeous skeleton key is from the Etsy Shop Zeus and Zoey and can be found here. The pen nib was a trinket I had found and saved in my treasure box. The vintage buttons were a gift from my husband's cousin, Debbie Clapper who gave me not one but two of her mom's old button tins. Oh what treasures lie in those tins!! Thanks Debbie!!

Sweet Open Roses ~ These were actually the roses I created when I photographed my step by step tutorial earlier this month using scraps of paper from my January ScrapThat! Kit. That tutorial can be found here. 

Distressing ~ I so enjoy my Donna Salazar/Zutter Distrezz-It-All and use it on nearly every project I create!! It makes such quick work of my distressing and gives such cool thick ragged edges. I used it on the circle and all straight edges. I did pull out my Prima Distress tool for the rounded corners of my ticket. 

Fussy Cutting ~ the ticket and sentiment piece were fussy cut from some scraps of Weekend Market paper.

I'll start by sharing the layout I created with Amy's fabulous sketch. Our daughter, Elizabeth, became engaged to Andrew in May, with an October wedding. This is one of their engagement photos. 

"Dream Come True"

Main Kit

I used just the main kit for this page. There are so many options with this gorgeous paper collection by Prima, but if you have any engagement or wedding photos, this is a great kit to pull them out to scrap!! Look at all the wonderful goodies in this kit from the set of canvas and felt hearts to the sweet pink blossoms and twine. I added the Dusty Attic Chipboard from my stash. ScrapThat! takes Dusty Attic Orders every quarter so you can get exactly the pieces you want. Some time ago I found a package of little heart/key trinkets clearanced down to a mere 50 cents that I scattered around the page as well. I'll be giving you the details on how I created the stamped canvas hearts next month.

Here's a little tip for you. I always cut out the paper behind my larger mats to use for creating other embellishments. The back side of this paper is a lovely pink. I cut out behind the large black alpha photo mat and used this paper along with the Smooch included in the kit to create my larger focal flower. I'll be sharing a photo tutorial on how to create this "Full Bloom Rose" in February.

Another of Elizabeth and Andrew's engagement photos. A friend told me this looked like a photo from a fairy tail, so I couldn't resist using this sentiment on the page, "True love stories never have endings." Don't you just love it when you have stamps that work for a title? 

Not only is the main kit fabulous, the Flower Add on includes these amazing Prima beauties and the Embellishment add on has the lovely Prima cherubs and gorgeous KaiserCraft heart flourishes. I added another of the Dusty Attic flourishes purchased from ScrapThat!. I also had fun with some mixed media gesso and glimmer mist. Again, I cut about a two inch border for my layered edge and used the rest to create more embellishments ~ the small roses, leaves, butterfly, and heart flourish.

"A Perfect Day"

Just a couple weeks ago we finally got the wedding photos and it was well worth the wait. I had one page left to create with my kit, so you know it had to be a wedding photo. Don't they look happy?

Can you believe these pages were all from the same kit? I love the variety of looks that you can get from this collection. The lovely Prima flowers are in the FAO kit and the sparkly red Green Tara hearts and wood heart flourish are in the EAO kit.

Have you noticed all the clustered ribbon banners lately? These ones were inspired by our former DT member, Marilyn Rivera. I love how she works her paper to look like fabric! Of course my DA chipboard piece came with my most recent ScrapThat! quarterly order.

Carolina Snow Details ~ ScrapThat January Kit

Here are the details for my third and final January ScrapThat! Kit project. As I mentioned in my previous posts, a winter snow in North Carolina is something to get excited about. We lived in our North Carolina home from 1985 to 2000 before moving back to Ohio to be closer to family. We spent many happy years there, and this is the first scrapbook page I've created of our lovely Carolina home.

Tips and Techniques:

Tattered Pinecone ~ The pinecones were created with my Tim Holtz Tattered Pinecone Die, then edged with some white gesso. I used some scraps of my BoBunny paper that were grey and rubbed with distress ink to get the lovely tan/brown color. 

Bitty Blossom Roses ~ The sweet blue flowers wer created with Donna Salazar's Bitty Blossoms Dies by Spellbinders. 

Pearl Strand ~ Doesn't this pearl strand from the kit look gorgeous looped through the cluster? 

Vintage buttons ~ I added some vintage buttons from my button collection among my clusters.

Beaded Flowers ~ I also do a little jewelry making, so have lots of extra beads. I simply strung some seed beads onto a thin gauge wire to created these sweet beauties in several different sizes and added a pearl to the center of each to cover the criss crossed wires.

Branches ~ The fern in the Spellbinder Folaige Dies looks like bare branches when inked brown. 

Tattered Floral ~ I cut a scrap of canvas in the smaller Tim Holtz Tattered Floral Die for the center of my two toned flowers. The darker outside layer is a scrap I had in my stash that was leftover from a previous project made from Tim Holtz Kraft Glasine paper that had been cut on the larger Tattered floral die, then stamped with a script stamp and inked on the edges. I created two sizes based on the scraps I had and finished with pearl brad centers. It's always nice to use up a scrap of something that I've had laying around. 

Twine Flower ~ My tutorial for the Twine Flower under the Sweet Open Rose can be found here. 

Punched Edge ~ I worked on this page at a December crop and several people brought their snowflake punches, which I borrowed to punch around the page. Some are border punches, and some are regular snowflake punches that I partially punched into the edge. 

Quilled Snowflake ~ As soon as I saw this kit, I knew I wanted to include some handcrafted snowflakes. I bought a quilling board and tool on clearance about a year ago and decided it was time to pull it out and give it a try. This is my first stab at quilling. The pattern for this gorgeous flake can be found here. 

Mixed Media ~ The background paper started out as a plain grey sheet. I started by stamping snowflakes in two different colors. Next I took a die cut from the Tim Holtz Washers Die and used it as a stencil to apply Martha Stewart Texture Effect. I finished by misting with Sapphire Glimmer mist and used a dropper to create drips with the misting solution as well. 

Dimensional Snowflake ~ More mixed media here as I used the Texture Effect over a metal stencil to create this snowflake. 

Found Object ~ I don't have a close-up shot, but the round crochet pieces tucked in around my photo are cut out centers of doilies. I bought a bag of lace at a yard sale this summer and these little gems were hidden in the bottom of the bag. I figured if someone took the time to cut them out, surely I'd figure out something to do with them, and here they are.

Westville Lake Details ~ ScrapThat! January Kit

I'm back with more details about my Westville Lake layout using the gorgeous ScrapThat! January Kit. 

Before I get to those details, I would like to ask for prayer for my husband's dear friend and our associate pastor. He was out in Iowa to see his mother who had a stroke. A week ago, he was broadsided resulting in massive internal injuries and a broken pelvis. He is expected to make a slow but full recovery. He is still having issues with his heart rate going too high at times. Thanks for praying for Ralph and his wife Chris. 

My parents live on a small lake nearby in Northeast Ohio. This shot was taken from their home overlooking Westville Lake. I'd say this is more than a gaggle of geese.

Tips and Techniques:

Window ~ As soon as I saw the Lodge paper in the Powder Mountain collection, I knew I wanted to create a window and this gorgeous photo overlooking the lake and geese was the perfect photo to use for this technique. I created a cut file on my Gazelle to cut the window from chipboard, but you could also cut it with a craft knife. I inked the window brown then covered with Distress Rock Candy Crackle paint. Once dry and crackled, I used the white Prima inker in the kit to lightly rub over the window frame to highlight the cracks.

Snow ~ the light "flakes" of snow was simply a light misting using the calico white mist by Mister Huey. 

Icicles ~ I dripped white gesso mixed with pouring medium where I would be placing the window. While wet, I sprinkled super fine iridescent glitter for a snowy, icy effect.  

Kit flowers ~ Isn't this large focal flower combined with the Prima vine just gorgeous?

Stitching ~ I machine stitched around the border of the page, then used my Donna Salazar Distrezz-It-All to rough up the edges. 

Layered Snowflakes ~ I love the combination of kraft and white, so I cut the back of the corrugated mat out behind the photo on another page and used the scrap to die cut these lovely flakes, then edged with the white ink. I topped it with one of my crocheted Snowflakes and Bitty Blossoms flowers. The lovely pears are in the EAO Kit.

Frosty Details ~ ScrapThat January Kit

When we lived in North Carolinas, a snow deep enough to play in was a rare event. Here is one of those times. The children and I built a snowman complete with hat, scarf, stone eyes, and carrot nose. We built him in the front yard and received many honks and thumbs up as we worked. This is one of those rare photos where I am out from behind the camera along with our youngest daughter, Maria. Such a fun day way back then. 

You saw this page during my ScrapThat! January Reveal, but I wanted to share some details. I had so much fun creating with the gorgeous ScrapThat! January kit!! 

"Frosty"

Tips and Techniques:

Crocheted Snowflakes ~ As you probably know I'm a life long crafter. So when I went to a crop recently, and one of the gals was teaching some beginning crochet skills, she found a snowflake pattern for me. I know the basic stitches, but tend to get stuck reading patterns. Alison helped me through the pattern, and once I got it, I kind of went crazy crocheting snowflakes. The large one with the button and the smaller one on the left of the photo topped with a rose are the same pattern, just different size crochet thread and hooks. I also made a crocheted snowflake ornament for each of our children for their trees by stiffening them and adding a hanger loop. The embellishment add-on kit contained the BoBunny Powder Mountain Buttons, so perfect to embellish this flake. You can go to Red Heart Yarn for the free pattern download for this snowflake. 

Altered Prima Flowers ~ The aqua Prima flowers in the FAO Kit were a bit bright for this page, so I spritzed them with sapphire glimmer mist and then edged with the white chalk ink included in the kit. I also used my round nose pliers to open them up and roll the petals back. While most everything on this page is from the kit or handcrafted, the Prima "US" bulb is from my personal stash. 

Inking ~ The base paper behind the punched edges is the Sugar Double Dot paper which is white. I applied several layers of distress ink to get the graded color below the border punched edges. 

White Fabric Flowers ~ These flowers are easy to make. Just cut out circles of sheer fabric - each circle a little larger. They don't need to be perfect - just rough cut. Then melt the edges slightly over a tea light candle flame. A pair of tweezers helps keep your fingers from getting too hot. As the edges melt, the fabric forms a cupped shape. Just put a dab of glue in the center of each circle and glue together. Once dry, I used my hole piercer to put a hole in the center to pull the stamens through. Pull the stamen cords to one side and adhere with a dab of glue. Trim off the excess. Once dry you can arrange the stamens. I used 5 for each flower. These gorgeous stamens came in the kit. and I knew they would be just perfect for these flowers. 

Modeling Paste Flourish ~ I mixed micro beads into the modeling paste before applying it over the stencil, then while wet sprinkled some more on top for some nice texture and shimmer. 

Embossing Powder Snow ~ Stampendous Fran-tage has some amazing embossing powders and mica flakes. I sprinkled a mixture across the page and heat set from below. 

Handcrafted Rose/Crochet Snowflake ~ A close-up of the smaller hand crocheted snowflake with one of my roses created with the Donna Salazar Bitty Blossoms Spellbinder dies. I used the Denim Dot paper and inked with the white chalk ink included in the kit. 

Embossed Snowflake ~ I punched this snowflake, applied clear embossing ink and covered with Ranger holographic embossing powder. While still hot, I sprinkled more powder on and heated again until I had layered on three coats of powder. 

Buttons ~ I layered on the BoBunny buttons from the kit and clustered with the snowflake buttons. I also added some of the BoBunny Jewel rhinestones from the EAO Kit.

Sew Precious ~ Guest Designer for Colorful Creations

I'm guest designing this week for Colorful Creations. I was so excited when Tabitha invited me to design for them and absolutely delighted when I saw her fabulous sketch I'd be working with. Colorful Creations is a forum based community with a fun atmosphere and great challenges. I hope you'll check them out. 

Back when we lived in North Carolina, our daughters did quite a bit of sewing for their 4-H projects. This is Elizabeth's second year on stage at the Fashion Revue modeling this sweet jumper she made.

This wonderful sketch can be used for any scrapbooking style from CAS to urban grunge or like my page, shabby chic mixed media. Thanks for the inspiration, Tabitha!! This sketch challenge runs through January 27.

Tips and Techniques:

Handcrafted Flower ~ This sweet focal flower was created with Donna Salazar's Grand Peony and Bitty Blossoms Spellbinder dies. I love combining these two sets to create roses. The lace below is a vintage lace flower patch. The other lovely flowers are Prima.

Chipboard ~ I wanted a soft look with the chipboard, so I soaked the ends of these Dusty Attic pieces in some warm water for a few minutes and they separated beautifully. A little glimmer mist and they were perfect for this page. This won't work with all chipboard, but if the pieces are layered like DA, it's a lovely technique. I also tucked some Zva crystal flourishes around the chipboard. 

Fibers ~ The fibers here are some pulled apart yarn and some threads pulled off the edge of a fabric scrap. I pulled them through some Mod Podge and laid them around the clusters. In a few places where the fiber didn't stick to the page as well as I wanted I used some liquid glue to help hold it in place. 

Sewing elements ~ While I didn't want an over the top sewing themed page, I had fun tucking sewing related elements into the project such as this Prima zipper pull that I misted to age and the metal spool charm that I wrapped with fiber. 

Lettering ~ I die cut the SEW letters from a scrap of project paper and to get the metallic look, embossed them with some Fran-tage aged silver embossing powder. 

Mixed Media Background ~ Although this background took several steps, it was pretty easy. I applied gesso with a credit card, misted with glimmer mist, used a stencil to apply flexible modeling paste and once dry, misted again. On the left side I brushed on some opaque flakes medium. 

Alcohol Inked Charms ~ Momenta makes the cutest metal pieces and they can be easily altered to match any project by applying alcohol ink. For these flowers I put a couple drops of alcohol ink on my craft mat and used a small paint brush to apply. I use a felt applicator tool to apply the ink to the butterflies for a more mottled appearance. 

Mannequin ~ I left this Kaisercraft piece bare and just added a piece of Webster's Pages trim and vintage metal rose trinket with the feather cluster behind.

Birthday Card for BoBunny Challenge

We are being blessed with some wonderful winter days here in Ohio. It's forecast to be in the 50's over the next several days. Quite warm for January!! Our daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Andrew, are coming over later this afternoon, and we are taking them out for dinner to celebrate Andrew's birthday which is later this month. 

Here is the card I created for him. The BoBunny Card Challenge this month is to use 70% white space. All right, I didn't pull out my math and measuring skills to figure it out, but I think I did OK eyeing it??  I'm not used to white space, so this card came together more quickly than most for me. Come to think of it, this may well be my first CAS card.

There's not too much going on here other than using my Prima distress tool on the straight edges and some doodling on the banner flags and sentiment die cut.
