Birthday Wishes for Donna Salazar Designs

Birthdays are special events in our family, and I enjoy making handcrafted cards to celebrate! Here is one I created for Donna Salazar Designs featuring her GCD Studios Natural Beauty and Family Jean's Collections, along with lots of other Donna Salazar goodies!! 

I want to thank Donna for giving me the opportunity to continue designing with her fabulous products. I'm so excited and honored to be part of this amazing team!

Tips and Techniques:

Donna's Spellbinders Wonderful Wings Dies are my favorite butterfly dies. Here I cut a butterfly shadow from Donna's Want2Scrap Canvas and centered the coordinating Want2Scrap Bling onto the die cut canvas. I rubbed Donna's Clearsnap Mix'd Media Inx in Chiffon and Honey onto the canvas. Donna's Want2Scrap BYOB was just perfect for the butterfly trail. I added a Bitty Blossoms flower for a girlie touch.  

The doily is cut with Spellbinders Ironwork Accents. I wrapped some white metallic cording through each side. 

Have you tried out Donna's GCD Studio's Mixed Media Stax 2 yet? These flowers and leaves are cut with her bitty blossoms dies from the luscious mulberry paper in the Stax. I colored them with Mix'd Media Inx and topped the leaves with gems from Donna's Want2Scrap Build Your Own Bling set. I just love how Donna thinks through each and every product she creates to coordinate with her other product lines. Finally, I dabbed Clearsnap Glue Gloss on the flowers, leaves and around the edges of the card, then sprinkled with Donna's Clearsnap Fairy Dust Glitter. 

I created this girlie birthday word art sentiment in Photoshop. The border was cut with Spellbinders Ironwork accents, and snippets of Donna's Want2Scrap Bling to accent the border. I machine stitched the edges, then made quick work of distressing with my handy dandy Zutter Distrezz-It-All by Donna.

Finally, this girlie grunge card needed just a bit of lace, so I stamped this lovely lace piece using Donna's Art Gone Wild Cotton Lace Stamp with Jasmine Inx, then heat embossed using Clearsnap Jasmine Embossing Powder. I fussy cut it out to tuck into the layers. You can see more of the sparkly Fairy Dust Glitter across the top here.

Men in Black 2 with Grungy Corrugated Leaf Tutorial ~ July GDT for Donna Salazar

I'm thrilled to be sharing another project for Donna Salazar. I enjoy getting inky and inventive with Donna's amazing products. I had so much fun coming up with some new techniques to share with you today including a tutorial for my Grungy Corrugated Leaves.

Andrew and his groomsmen posed for this shot looking quite serious and dare I say intimidating? To capture that feel, I decided to go dark and grungy with this non-traditional wedding layout. One of the things I so appreciate about Donna's paper is the versatility within each collection. The papers featured on this page are from her GCD Natural Beauty Collection, the same collection used for "The Kiss", a sweeter and more elegant page posted here earlier this month.

I would like to dedicate this page to the memory of Earl Hennis, who's vintage gears and machined pieces are tucked in among the Sprightly Sprockets. His granddaughter and my dear friend, Mandy, gave me these precious pieces that had been part of his workshop collection.

"Men in Black"

I used Donna's Sprightly Sprockets die set by Spellbinders to create these realistic metallic gears using black cardstock and Viva Inka Gold. I made lots to tuck in all around this page. If you have guys in your life, these dies are a must have. 

Here's a close-up of the other side of the photo.

Now for these grungy guy flowers. Can you guess what dies I used to cut these flowers? If you picked Sprightly Sprockets, you are correct! I placed a vintage gear and hex nut in each for my flower centers. Scroll down to find my tutorial for the Grungy Corrugated Leaves. 

I used mixed media and Donna's Want2Scrap Stencils to build a grungy background on this wonderful wood grain paper. I started by spreading ceramic stucco across the page leaving the edges clear to see the gorgeous wood grain on the edges. I then misted with Donna's Clearsnap Smooch Spritz in Wood Stain and touches of Pralines and Cream. Once dry, I splattered with black gesso. I mixed black and red paint into more of the ceramic stucco and used it with Donna's 8" x 10" Small Bricks stencil. Such a perfect accent to reflect the bricks behind the guys in the photo. 

These gears are perfect to tuck into layers and well, just everywhere on my page. 

Oh did I have fun grunging up Donna's GCD Studio's Natural Beauty Chipboard Alpha letters for my title. I used my heat tool to melt black tulle onto the letters and inked the edges with Midnight Mix'd Media CHOX Inx by Clearsnap. I used Donna's Want2Scrap Alphabet Stencil and blended fiber medium to create the smaller letters. Another of her Want2Scrap stencils, Small Arrows, was used along the top and bottom of the page with ceramic stucco. I rubbed on just a bit of Midnight CHOX Inx to add grungy texture to the arrows. The distressed edges were achieved with my go to DSD Zutter Distrezz-It-All.

This charm and wrapped cord are jewelry findings from my stash. I dabbed them with Midnight CHOX Inx and Grecian Gold Rub'n Buff to distress. Behind the cord, I rubbed Sparrow CHOX Inx into the background and behind the charm, dripped Donna's Wood Stain and Pralines and Cream Smooch Spritz. Have you wondered what I used to adhere my elements to the mixed media background? My favorite go to adhesive is Helmar 450. It is quick drying and really holds even heavy objects in place. 

Grungy Corrugated Leaf Tutorial

I have to say, Donna's Corrugated Board is one of my favorite products. What a treat not to spend time peeling the top off of cardboard, and it can be used for so many embellishments.

Step 1. Cut a piece of corrugated board to size for your leaf die with the lines running the length of the leaf.

Step 2. Mist the piece of corrugated board with water front and back. Push on the dampened cardboard to scrunch and distress. 

Step 3. Use a Bitty Blossoms leaf die and your die cutting machine to cut out your leaf. You may need to run the die through your die cutting machine several times to cut cleanly through the corrugated board. Remove from die and set aside to dry. Although I only show one leaf here in the tutorial, I used all four leaf dies from this set to cut leaves for my page. You could also use leaf dies from Donna's Grand Peony or Rose Creations die sets. 

Step 4. Rub with Midnight CHOX Inx, leaving some of the corrugated board color showing. Set aside to dry.

Step 5. Using a light touch, rub Grecian Gold Rub'n Buff onto the raised areas of your leaf. 

Now your Grungy Corrugated Leaf is ready to use on your page. You can curl the edges or leave flat. 

Variation:

Instead of inking with black, I used Jasmine Mix'd Media Inx for the leaves I created for "The Kiss", then rubbed Pewter Inx onto the raised edges. You could use any combination of colors to create lovely, grungy leaves for your projects.

The Kiss ~ GDT for Donna Salazar

It's a dream come true to be designing this month for Donna Salazar. If you follow my work, you know that I adore using her products!! I'm a girlie grunge gal for sure.

In case you missed the announcement on Monday, I was asked by Donna to be her Social Media Coordinator. I'm so excited and honored to be a part of the DSD Team! Thank you Donna and Natasha for this amazing opportunity!! 

From the time Elizabeth was a young girl, she dreamed of finding that one special guy. She committed to waiting to share her heart until that knight in shining armor came into her life. She found that young man in Andrew. Our pastor knew of her commitment and asked Andrew during the wedding ceremony if he had a large S hidden on a shirt under his suit, because he certainly must be superman to have captured Elizabeth's heart. They waited to share their very first kiss until they were man and wife. While this isn't the first kiss they shared that day, I just had to showcase this special photo taken in the archway at the reception backlit with streaming golden light.

Donna's Natural Beauty Collection is absolutely perfect to showcase this special photo. Below you will find my tutorial for the crushed voile peonies. 

Donna's Spellbinder Flower Dies are my absolute favorites, and I have used Grand Peony, Carnation Creations, and Bitty Blossoms to create these beauties. To bring in accents of gold to the background, I misted and dripped Pralines & Cream Smooch Spritz on the background and border. 

I just adore Donna's new Want2Scrap stencils and used the Polka Dot Heart with blended fiber medium above this cluster. This dotted heart kind of faded into the background so I rubbed Pewter and Denim Mix'd Media Inx softly around the edges. I'm always looking for subtle ways to accent the theme of my photos and this heart was a perfect way to reflect the love shining in this photo. 

I'm all about girlie grunge, and cut this sweet butterfly from Donna's Want2Scrap Corrugated Board with her Wonderful Wings Spellbinders dies. I used Jasmine Mix'd Meda Inx and Fairy Dust Glitter to color and topped with a Bitty Blossoms flower created from Donna's Mulberry Paper from the Mix'd Media Stax 2 collection. I extended the wings with chipboard from Want2Scrap and grunged them up with puffy paint dabbed with Mix'd Media Inx. My butterfly trail is a snippet of Donna's Build Your Own Bling by Want2Scrap. There's no easier way to distress edges than with Donna's Distrezz-It-All tool by Zutter. I'd be lost without this handy tool!! Really!! I use it on nearly every project I create. 

The top cluster includes more handcrafted flowers cut with Donna's amazing dies. The Bitty Blossoms and smaller carnation are created with Natural Beauty and Family Jeans papers. I tucked in some of Donna's Hand Drawn Swirls chippies. I'll be sharing a tutorial for these grungy, textured leaves later this month. 

I was inspired by the brick tutorial Lisa Gregory shared last month. I needed some smaller letters for my title, and the letters in Donna's alpha stencil were just right. I used fiber medium colored with Mix'd Media Inx and instead of applying to paper I used a craft mat, creating several sets to have enough letters for my title. Once dry, the letters peeled right off my mat - so easy and I was able to get just the right color and size letters needed for my title. I spread Clearsnap Glue Gloss around the edges of my page and sprinkled with Donna's Fairy Dust Glitter by Clearsnap. 

Crushed Voile Peony Tutorial

These gorgeous peonies take some time, but are really easy to create!

Supplies:

Crushed voile fabric (home decor fabric)

Grand Peony dies

Candle

Tweezers

Die cutting machine (not pictured)

Cardstock scraps (not pictured)
Bowl of water (not pictured)

Step 1. For each peony, cut two of each size petal. I have found that I can cut up to 4 layers of this thin crushed voile at a time. I make a sandwich to cut them. On your cutting pad, place a scrap of cardstock, then up to 4 layers of fabric trimmed a little large than the die, then the die with the cutting edge facing down. Use whatever cutting plates you would normally use to cut paper and run through your die cutting machine. Depending on how much pressure your machine has, you may have to run it through several times to get a clean cut. Just check to make sure the cardstock is cut all the way through before removing the fabric from the dies.

For each whole flower, I cut two each of five different size petal layers. Grand Peony has seven petal dies and I used all but the very largest and smallest. Depending on the size flower you want, you can vary which sizes you cut. You can also use more or fewer layers depending on the look you are going for.

If you don't have Grand Peony, you could create a similar flower using Rose Creations.

***Tip*** It's a good idea to cut a couple extras in case you get a little carried away in the next step. 

Step 2. Light a tea light or small candle. Hold the petals close to, but not touching the flame, moving each petal across the flame one at a time. The petals should roll up toward the center of the flower as they melt. You don't want to melt too much, just the edge. Be sure to have a bowl of water close by so you can quickly dip the petals into water if you accidentally get the fabric too close to the flame. (It's not a project for unsupervised children.) The petals will be uneven and some will end up smaller than others, but that's ok, since in nature, peony flowers have such gorgeous variation in the petal size as well. If you really melt a petal too much, just toss it and grab one of those extras you cut. For the smaller size petals, I use tweezers to hold them. 

Step 3. Glue the flowers together starting with the largest petals first. Offset each layer so the petals of the section you are gluing, fall between the petals of the section below it. (As shown below.) I use Beacon Fabri-Tac Glue, but any quick drying liquid scrapbooking adhesive should work as well. 

Here's a third layer.

Keep on adding layers until you have an entire peony put together.

Step 4. Add a Bitty Blossom flower to the center. You could use a variety of things for the center. I've used stamen, and you could also use a gem or button.

Birthday Card Details for ScrapThat!

Birthdays are always a special time of celebration. My husband, Gary, had a birthday earlier this month, and I created this card for him. We rarely celebrate on our birthdays so having this card to give him helped make it a special day. Yes, we did celebrate this past weekend by having all our children gather here with us for dinner and a sweet time of fellowship together. 

I created this card using the April ScrapThat! Kit featuring the Donna Salazar Natural Beauty Collection. The colors and designs of these papers are so perfect for a masculine touch!

Tips and Techniques:

Stamping ~ Each of these banner flags except the bird was stamped using a variety of stamps from Donna Salazar (Ruler), Tim Holtz, and Inkadinkado. The red heart was also heat embossed with clear embossing powder. I love you was hand written and Happy Birthday was created with my printer. 

Doodling ~ I doodled around the edges of most of the flags. 

Distressing ~ I used my Tim Holtz distress tool around the edges of the mat and the flags were inked on the edges. 

Handcrafted Flowers ~ I used scraps of the kit paper with Donna Salazar's Rose Creations dies to create these sweet flowers. I inked them with brown distress inks to keep a masculine feel. The centers are the kit pearls colored with alcohol ink. The leaves were also cut from kit paper scraps, but with Donna's Bitty Blossoms dies. They were pinched to add veins and colored with green distress inks. 

Cording ~ I had one small piece of the kit cording left. This cording is so gorgeous that I pulled the scrap apart and tucked it into my cluster. 

Chipboard ~ I inked this Dusty Attic piece in greys and black soot Distress Inks, then covered with clear embossing powder and heat set for a glossy finish. 

Burlap and Bow ~ I backed a strip of the burlap with iron on interfacing to give stability, then spritzed with spray ink in a color similar to the burlap. I cut a strip and adhered it around the front to the back of the card, trimming even at both edges. Then on top of that I adhered sheer ribbon leaving a length on both ends long enough to tie a nice bow. The front mat is adhered over the ribbon to the front of the card.

"The Journey Awakens the Soul" Details for ScrapThat!

We are so happy to have Andrew added to our family. This photo was taken before their October wedding ceremony as he contemplates his future with our Elizabeth. 

I created this layout with the gorgeous ScrapThat! April kit featuring Donna Salazar's Natural Beauty collection and gorgeous Prima Flowers and Trinkets.

"The Journey Awakens the Soul"

Tips and Techniques:

Corded Paper Rays ~ This close-up shows the lovely dimension much better!! I've been inspired by Frank Garcia's work with cording and thought I'd put my spin on it for this page. I cut the paper from this upper corner in toward the center of the page. I reinforced each point with an additional little triangle of paper, then pierced each point. I knotted the end of a length of cotton crochet thread and used a needle to pull the thread through a point leaving the knotted end on the bottom. I extended the cord across the page and pierced another hole near that edge and pulled the thread through to the back. I also adhered each paper point in place. 

Burlap Banner ~ I cut the kit burlap into banner flags and tucked one between each point. 

Handcrafted flowers ~ I used thick handmade mulberry paper with rose creations dies to create these dreamy flowers. The centers are the darling EAO Maya Road Metal Rose Trinkets. 

Corded Hearts ~ This gorgeous Prima strand of corded hearts was just perfect to extend the corded points and banner. 

Flowers ~ These Prima flowers are so gorgeous that I left them as is. The small white flower is handcrafted with the same mulberry paper and Donna Salazar's Bitty Blossoms dies. The leaves are from a scrap of kit paper colored with distress inks and pinched for dimension. 

Gears ~ I used Donna Salazar's Sprightly Sprockets dies to cut gears from a scrap of thin chipboard. I painted them black, then dabbed with a gold paint dauber and while still wet, heat set to bubble and add texture. 

Chipboard ~ My friend, Mandy, gave me the tag and bird chippies while I was working on this page and they were a perfect fit. I painted them, then lightly inked to highlight the raised designs. I used a scrap of jute from the burlap to tie onto the tag. The flourish is by Blue Fern Studio, which I also painted and inked. 

Title ~ The metal title piece was silver. I applied alcohol ink to color.

Hi everyone! My name is Lynn Shokoples and I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I've also been blessed to join the Bo Bunny and Quick Quotes design teams this year. When I'm not scrapbooking I'm a wife, and a mom to two wonderful young adults, Nicole who's 25 and Ryan who is 20 and my new son-in-law Christopher. I'm so thrilled and honored to be a Guest Designer this month with such a group of talented artists here at ScrapThat.  introducing our fabulous April Kit, "Within Nature"

Featuring the GCD/Donna Salazar collection, "Natural Beauty." Opening the box to this kit feels like opening your closet and finding your most favorite, comfortable clothes packed with a little bling! The colors are rich and vintage and range from elegant pale neutrals to muted pinks, to deep denim blues and sages. These are paired with textured blooms from Prima, Petaloo and more!

This April Kit was amazing to work with. It is no secret I adore working with Donna Salazar's fabulous designs. This collection is totally gorgeous "Girlie Grunge" with the earthy neutrals, greens, and blues and the girlie pinks. As you'll see with our DT Creations this kit can go in so many different directions. My first project today is a page inspired by Amy's oh so lovely April sketch. 

My niece was the sweet flower girl in Elizabeth's wedding this past October. Isn't she darling?

In place of the single doily in the sketch, I layered paper doilies along with a doily I punched with one of my decorative corner punches. I fussy cut the cage and bird to add to my cluster. This cording is so gorgeous and unique. It is quite thick, but so soft and easy to work with. I pulled some thick handmade mulberry paper from my stash along with my Donna Salazar dies to make a few flowers to add to the gorgeous MK and FAO flowers. The kit and FAO flowers are so fabulous!! I usually do something to alter my flowers, but these are so pretty and so perfectly coordinated with the papers, that I used them straight out of the package. The flourish is from my stash.

Next up is a photo of Andrew before the wedding - contemplating his future with Elizabeth. Such a special photo and I wanted to create a special layout for it. 

"The Journey Awakens the Soul"

I love the earthy organic feel to this particular paper and thought it would be perfect for this more masculine page. I have been inspired by the work Frank Garcia is doing with cording on his pages and enjoyed giving it a shot. Here's a little tip if you want to give it a try. Be sure to reinforce the point of the paper where you plan to connect the cording. Drop by Frank's blog for more inspiration. 

To get the banner effect under the curled paper, I cut flags from the kit burlap and layered with some mulberry paper flowers I created. The beautiful flower centers are from the EAO Kit. These little metal roses are just so sweet. Don't you just adore the Prima focal flower. It comes already inked, and layered with the fabulous button in the center ~ it looks so gorgeous without any altering.

I know there are a lot of creative things that can be done with the corded Prima Hearts in the EAO Kit, but I couldn't resist placing them across the page just the way they came out of the package. I'll be sharing the details of how I created the gears from scraps and my Sprightly Sprockets dies. The chipboard and title plate are from my stash.

One of my close scrapbooking friends, Mandy, celebrates her birthday on St. Patrick's day. I couldn't resist using the greens in this collection to create a card for her.

I used my Cricut along with the CTMH Artiste and Art Philosophy cartridges for the shapes. The orange tinged flower was left from my February Kit, and I used the kit pearls for my Wonderful Wings butterfly body. (Mandy is a CTMH consultant, so if you are looking for one of these cartridges, stop by her blog for details on how to order one.) Be sure to stop by on March 8 for a photo tutorial to create my sparkling butterfly.

My husband's birthday is coming up in April, so I made him a card too. I'm not too worried that he will see his card, since he'd rather play golf than look at my blog. He's so supportive of my craft, and I wanted to create an extra special card for him.

The banner flags are all hand cut and most of them stamped. The center red heart was also embossed. The flowers and leaves were cut from kit paper using Donna Salazar's Rose Creations for the flowers and Bitty Blossoms dies for the leaves. I had one little snippet of that gorgeous cording left, so I pulled it apart and tucked the curled pieces into my cluster. The chipboard and ribbon are from my stash.
