Peaceful Day by the Sea ~ Bird is the Word featuring The Scrapping Stamper August Sketch

The weekend has arrived. I have plans to go to Pat Catan's for their monthly two day crop. I so enjoy the creative inspiration of scrapping with my scrappy gal pals!!

Last week some dear friends gave me a pile of tomatoes, and I mean a big pile. They were gorgeous and dead ripe, so I went right to work and canned 34 quarts of diced tomatoes. My husband, Gary, is Italian so of course I make our sauce from scratch. These tomatoes will be so lovely this winter. Gardening is a lot of work, and I soooo appreciate receiving some of the bounty of all those efforts, so I decided to create a scrapbook page for them as a little thanks.

Holly and Jake's son, Justin, went to be with our Lord two years ago after a battle with a rare and aggressive form of epilepsy. I have many new followers, so I'll share just a little. Holly, is a scrapbooker, but was expecting their sixth child, so had little time or emotional energy to be scrapping. The Lord impressed on me to ask them if some of us could hold a crop at our church to capture some of Justin's memories for them.  I still feel blessed that so many people came together, family, friends, church family, and over 125 pages of precious memories were put together for them.

I have a few extra photos from the crop (they were all doubles) and thought I would scrap this photo from a family vacation in Hawaii with Holly's parents, brother and his lovely wife. Justin is on the left with always outstretched arms embracing life, with two of his siblings, his uncle, and dad. This vacation was a time of peace for them, being by the ocean with family, so I took on the challenge at Bird is the Word to use a form of the word "peace" on my project with the title, "Peaceful Day by the Sea." I've also been enjoying the challenges over at Scrapping Everyday Miracles. Their August challenge is to scrap a favorite family vacation, and the twist is to include some stenciling. I know this vacation was a favorite for the Reed family and my stenciling is in the top right corner.

I used Shannon's fabulous August sketch with a mix of Donna Salazar paper:

Here's the gorgeous August Sketch by The Scrapping Stamper

Techniques:

Gesso ~ I dry brushed gesso over most of the papers and embellishments to give a breezy, beachy feel to this page. I poured a couple larger drops of gesso on the upper left and tapped the page to get the drips. In the upper right corner I used more gesso over a Martha Stewart stencil.

Distressing ~ I went scrapbooking on Wednesday and forgot my Distrezz-It-All at home. Ugh, I cut my papers, but waited until I got home to do the distressing. I'm so spoiled by this machine!!!

Hemp Frame ~ I've seen such lovely twisted cord frames lately and had some sweet comments on the first one I tried. They are so easy to create. I looped several rings of hemp the size needed for the frame, then pulled out enough to go around 1 and 1/2 more times and cut it off there. Once cut, I wound the extra around the loops and tucked the end in to hide. If this doesn't make sense, let me know, and I will post a photo tutorial. Any kind of cording or twine can be used. You would probably want more loops for a thinner twine.

Corrugated Hearts ~ I splurged this week and bought the Tim Holtz mini hearts die set. I've had so much fun creating the butterflies with my Donna Salazar Corrugated Board that I thought I'd give the hearts a try. You can find the butterfly tutorial here. I used the same techniques to create the hearts and finished them off by wrapping with jute and cute little bows.

Embossed Stamping ~ I stamped this sweet quotation and immediately covered it in clear embossing powder, poured the excess back into the jar, and heat set. I think the embossing helps make it pop. It's hard to see here, but it really does make a difference. Here's a little trick I figured out as well. Some of this writing was so fine that it really didn't adhere any of the embossing powder, so I was left with some bare writing that just kind of faded into the background. I pulled out my clear Ranger embossing pen, traced the areas that were not coated, applied more embossing powder, and it worked like a charm so that the entire image was embossed. I wanted the scroll image at the top of the page to be more subtle, so it was not embossed. I added the title with a Distress Marker.

Hand Stitching ~ I scored a ball of cream crochet cotton at a yard sale last week, and on a whim thought I'd try stitching with it. It was so easy to work with, and I'll definitely be using this fiber for stitching again and again.

Lucky you and your tomatoes. I used to grow about 30 plants and had hundreds of tomatoes every year...and then we moved to where I grew up where it's quite rocky and haven't yet attempted tomatoes up here...definitely miss the homemade spaghetti sauce, salsa, etc.- so you enjoy them this winter!!

    Take care :),
