Bounder for Leaky Shed Studio, SATW, Prima BAP

It's a cold, but sunny day here in Ohio, in contrast to the sad day last week when we lost out Australian Shepherd, Bounder. We have so many happy memories!! He was 13 1/2 years old and was our daughter, Elizabeth's, dog. She had many fun times with him at 4-H and UKC obedience shows. They were one of the top ranked junior obedience teams for several years. When Elizabeth moved out, Bounder remained with us and he was quite a buddy to us, especially for my husband who took him on walks every day. Bounder loved to accompany us on any outdoor work we did around the house.

I've featured Leaky Shed Studio chipboard along with lots of Prima goodies. I haven't participated in a challenge in quite a while, so I went to the Prima Build a Page Sketch and Scrap Around The World mood board to find inspiration for my Leaky Shed design team layout. Below I share how I was inspired by the lovely SATW board.

"Bounder"

Tips and Techniques
Prima creates the most gorgeous flowers. I've clustered flowers from several collections. In order to get the patina color from the SATW mood board, I mixed Prima's Summer Sky and Sorbet Color Bloom mists, then brushed some of the flowers with the mist, then spritzed with water to get the natural variation of color I find in real blossoms. Some of the larger blossoms were also brushed with glue and sprinkled with chunky glass glitter.

I tucked buttons from the Sunrise Sunset collection into my clusters.

Here you can see a snippet of the Leaky Shed Studio Victorian Oval Frame, which was heat embossed with a mix of embossing powders. The clock was fussy cut from a page of Prima Printery paper.

I also tucked in one of Prima's oh so adorable Typo bulbs, so the sentiment Sunrise to Sunset would travel across the page through the buttons and bulb. In several places I've added brown sewing thread for texture.

The Leaky Shed Studio Harja Flourish Zwei fit perfectly to highlight my title framed by the Metal Lady Bird Prima Frame. I tucked in some flowers and below Bounder's name and added microbeads, chunky glass glitter and mica flakes.

There are so many sweet sentiments about remembering special moments in Prima paper collections. I've fussy cut these sweet words from several different paper collections. The doily is cut with a Prima die. I used the little Prima script stamp to edge my paper and add texture to open areas.

I just fell in love with Prima's Stamp-N-Add sets, and this is from the Butterfly Wings set. I stamped it, heat embossed, and fussy cut, shaping the wings.

More of the Leaky Shed Studio Victorian Oval Frame and Prima sentiments. For the grungy texture, I used the Prima Stone Wall #3 Stencil with crackle medium as a base, then spritzed and splattered with Color Bloom and more splatter with drawing ink. Then I topped it all with microbeads, glass glitter, and mica flakes.

My Inspiration:

There was a ton of inspiration in this month’s Mood Board at SATW.

First of all I was inspired by the quote. Yes – life IS a balance of holding on and letting go. I hand wrote this quote to include on my layout.

I was also inspired by the colors and textures. The weathered wood is used in my background paper, and I’ve used the patina color in my flowers as well.

Since this page is about the passing of time with our dear friend I included a vintage clock image in the photo cluster similar to the clock on the board. The snippet of lace on the clock inspired my use of textiles used to create the dog collar and the printed twill tucked next to my sentiment cluster.

I also adore the vintage frames and used a Leaky Shed Studio French Oval Frame around my photo. The bucket of gorgeous roses inspired my use of flowers and roses to surround the photo.

Cherish Wedding Card with Grungy Textured Chipboard Tutorial for Helmar

I'm so excited to be guest designing this month with Helmar!!

I just adore using Helmar's fabulous products. Today I'm sharing a wedding card I created for a special young couple. I also have a fun Grungy Textured Chipboard Tutorial featuring Helmar Craft & Hobby PVA Glue to share with you.

Cherish Wedding Card

Tips and Techniques
This shabby chic texture on my chipboard title is created with Helmar Craft & Hobby PVA Glue. Please scroll down for my step by step tutorial.

The base of this card is a handcrafted tag I received from the talented Marivic Clifton. She sells custom and special order tags and also has an Etsy shop with new and one of a kind vintage items. Details and a link to the Zeus and Zoey Etsy shop can be found HERE.

Of course, you know I had to add my own special touches. I applied more of the Helmar Craft & Hobby PVA Glue on either side of the butterfly and sprinkled with chunky glass glitter and microbeads. Because this glue dries clear, it is perfect for adding chunky textured embellishments to my projects.

Here I added mica flakes around the bottom flower cluster. I've found the best way to adhere Mica is to squeeze out a dollop of Helmar Craft & Hobby PVA Glue onto a craft mat. Pick up a single flake with tweezers and dip the back of the mica into the glue then place onto the paper. I adore how the print from the background paper shows through the translucent mica.

I added a few extra flowers and inked leaves using Helmar Premium Craft Glue. I also adhered the paper layers with Premium Craft Glue.

Grungy Textured Chipboard Tutorial

Supply List
Chipboard
White Gesso (or acrylic paint)
Spray Mists in colors of choice
Heat Tool

Step 1
Paint chipboard with white gesso.

Step 2
Apply Helmar Craft & Hobby PVA Glue to the surface of the gessoed chipboard. Because this piece is so intricate, I used a paint brush to apply the glue. If you are texturing a larger, less intricate piece, you could apply the glue directly from the bottle.

Step 3
Heat the wet glue until it bubbles and raises up creating texture.

Step 4
Brush with mica color mist of choice (purple here), then heat to dry. Brush randomly with second mica color mist (I used gold) and heat to dry. The mist settles into the crevices to highlight the amazing texture created by the heated glue.
**You could spritz on the mist, but I like the control of brushing on the liquid and the benefit of less waste.

Grungy Steampunk Card for Leaky Shed Studio

Birthdays are special times of celebration in our family. I created this masculine steampunk card for our son-in-law. I've been wanting to use the Leaky Shed Studio Hot Air Balloon for some time now and thought it would be fun to go steampunk with it. I've also used the Watch Parts, one of my favorite chipboard sets!!

Tips and Techniques
Steampunk, Tracey Sabella, Leaky Shed Studio, Donna Salazar, Helmar, Prima, Mixed Media
Often we think about molding paste being used with a stencil. Here, I've brushed Viva's Graphite Special Effect paste randomly over the chipboard, leaving bits of raw chipboard showing through in some places, and other areas with thicker layers of paste.

The Leaky Shed Studio Hot Air Balloon fit perfectly over this balloon from Prima's Cartographer paper collection, which I fussy cut and adhered to the back of the chipboard. The "basket" is a jewelry finding piece from my stash. For a steampunk edge, I adorned with metal clock hands and mini gears. Some of them were a silver/pewter color, so I heat embossed them with Donna Salazar's Leather Mix'd Media Embossing Powder, which has a coppery metallic sheen. Others were copper and left in their natural state.

Steampunk, Tracey Sabella, Leaky Shed Studio, Donna Salazar, Helmar, Prima, Mixed Media
The Leaky Shed Studio Watch Parts were heat embossed with black embossing powder and while still hot and molten, sprinkled with Leather embossing powder and reheated giving this rusty metal look.

Another view of the gears. You can see just how much shimmer and depth this embossing powder technique gives.

Faith Art Journal with Wispy Burlap Flower Tutorial for Donna Salazar's CHA New Release

I'm so excited to share in the CHA excitement of creating with Donna's new Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L products.

You know how much I enjoy mixing delicate girlie elements with rugged grungy things, and that's exactly what I got to do with these amazing new products to create my Faith Art Journal cover. As much as I adore mixed media, I've never worked with an art journal, so when I saw Donna's new Denim Craft Book with yummy thick chipboard pages, I knew this was my chance to dig in and create my first art journal. I started with the cover.

Be sure to scroll down the post to check out my photo tutorial for my Wispy Burlap Flowers. They are so easy to create with Donna's new Burlap Ribbon!!

Faith Art Journal

In my typical fashion, I altered the denim cover dramatically. What I love is that you can still see the texture and bits of blue denim peeking through. You can literally let your imagination run wild with this fabulous Craft Book. It is a generous 8 x 10 inches and contains 6 thick chipboard pages, which means one side for every month of the year, so you could create a calendar, planner, mini album, mixed media art journal . . .  I plan to create art pages for some of my favorite Scripture verses, so stay tuned to see what I come up with.

Tips and Techniques
I created the Wispy Burlap Flowers from Donna's new Burlap Ribbon. They are so easy to create!! I've included a step by step tutorial, so be sure to scroll down to check it out so you can make some of your own! I was inspired by burlap flowers created by Cool2Scrap found HERE.

I wanted to accent with denim elements, so used both of Donna's denim products by Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L to created these sweet flowers. Those products are her Denim Sheets (Packaged with Canvas Flags) and Denim Ribbon (packaged with Canvas Ribbon). They are different weights and colors so give a different feel even though they are the same size. I used the Clover 1 1/2" Kanzashi Flower Maker for a template. The finished flowers are dry brushed with gesso, and sprinkled with Twinkle Dust Glitter. I also tucked in a rhinestone broach from my jewelry findings collection.

Yes, Donna also designed adhesive products as well!! I used her Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L Foam Swirls to tuck in under each of my denim flowers. I sprinkled a combination of Clearsnap Mix'd Media Inx Embossing Powders in Honey and Denim across the adhesive surface and heat set. They paired beautifully with the chipboard piece I embossed similarly after inking with Mix'd Media Inx.

Here you can see the beautiful texture and bits of blue denim showing through. Donna has two cotton laces packaged together including this looped lace and the crocheted lace seen in the following photo. Like most lace, it's treated with sizing to keep it's lovely shape. The sizing needs to be removed for it to accept color. I rubbed the lace gently in warm water then pressed between two towels to remove most of the water then colored with diluted Pralines and Cream Smooch Spritz.

I dabbed the corner of the page, lace, and the trio of butterflies along the side with Glue Gloss and sprinkled with Twinkle Dust Glitter.

My embossed chipboard letters are in the same color family as the background, so I used the gorgeous colored crochet lace to provide contrast.

The Craft Book cover was painted with white gesso, leaving some areas of denim peeking through. I set this aside to dry while I created my flowers. Next I adhered pieces of printed tissue paper and dictionary paper from Donna's older Mix'd Media Stax 2 pad. (Can you find the denim definition??) Finally I stenciled with Mix'd Media Inx, then sprinkled lightly with coordinating Mix'd Media Inx Embossing Powders, then dry brushed lightly with more gesso. Around the cluster area I brushed on diluted Pralines and Cream Smooch Spritz.

Finally, I dabbed gel medium across the page then sprinkled with a mix of microbeads and chunky glass glitter.

Wispy Burlap Flower Tutorial

Supply List
Donna Salazar ~ Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L - Burlap Ribbon
Scissors
Tacky quick drying glue of choice (I used Helmar 450)
Trinket for flower center.

Step 1. Cut an 8 1/2 inch length of Donna’s Burlap Ribbon. (no photo)

Step 2. Pull out the length wise threads of burlap, leaving the stitched edge threads in place.

***Tip*** When you get to the threads near the edges, they may be caught at one end in the  edge stitching. Just snip off the thread being careful not to cut into the stitched edge and then pull the thread out.

Here's another close up of what it looks like as you pull this thread out.

Here's what it looks like with all the threads pulled out.

Step 3. Place a bead of quick drying tacky glue down one of the stitched edges. (My preference is Helmar 450 Quick Drying Adhesive.)

Step 4. Fold the burlap in half lengthwise placing the other stitched edge over the glued edge as shown in the photo.

***Tip*** It is inevitable that some of the cross threads on each end will come out. Once you glue the two sides together, you can trip off any excess stitched edge that extends out past the loops.

Step 5. Place another bead of glue down the stitched edge.

Step 6. Starting at one end, roll the glued edge to form your flower. I left a small opening (about 1/4 inch) in the center so it would be easier to add a button or gem. You wouldn’t need to leave an opening or could leave an even larger opening depending on the look you desire.

Bottom view of rolled up flower.

Top view of rolled up flower.

You can try different lengths of Burlap Ribbon to change the fullness of your flowers. For a more open flower, use your fingers to open up the flower pushing the loops from the center outward, then place a heavy book on the open flower, letting it sit over night

View after fluffing/pushing out loops.

Glittered with crystal bead center.

Thanks for stopping by today for CHA inspiration.

Mixed Media Blessings Box for Leaky Shed Studio

I hope that each of you had a wonderful Christmas
and would like to wish you many blessings in the coming year.

I have so many blessings day by day. However, as the year goes by, it's all to easy to overlook them, especially when those challenging days happen. I've created this Blessings Box, so I can write down those sweet blessings and collect them in my box. I've featured the gorgeous Leaky Shed Studio Moroccan BorderOrnate Banner, and Fancy Keyhole.

Blessings Box
Mixed Media Blessings Box, Tracey Sabella, Leaky Shed Studio, Lindy's Stamp Gang, Prima, Helmar, Petaloo

Tips and Techniques
Mixed Media Blessings Box, Tracey Sabella, Leaky Shed Studio, Lindy's Stamp Gang, Prima, Helmar, Petaloo
The base of my Blessings Box is a 6" square paper mache box. I painted the box and all chipboard pieces with two coats of white gesso. This Ornate Banner was misted with two colors of Lindy's Stamp Gang mist, then decorated with rhinestones.

I've edged the box with a mix of mica flakes, German glass glitter and microbeads.

The dangling cross is attached by looping cording through the cross and bead then knotted. The cording was then pulled through a gear, then through two holes in the box lid and knotted on the other side.

Mixed Media Blessings Box, Tracey Sabella, Leaky Shed Studio, Lindy's Stamp Gang, Prima, Helmar, Petaloo
The box base was layered with strips of sheetrock mesh and stenciled molding paste. I spritzed the textured surface with several colors of Lindy's Stamp Gang mist - allowing to dry between colors. The raised areas and box edges are rubbed with Viva Gold Modeling Cream.

Mixed Media Blessings Box, Tracey Sabella, Leaky Shed Studio, Lindy's Stamp Gang, Prima, Helmar, Petaloo
The metal flower was painted with white gesso, except for the rhinestones and dark center. Then when dry, I spritzed with several colors of mist.

The remaining flowers were misted in the same colors as the box base, then brushed with gesso. I dabbed them with Glossy Accents to adhere chunky glass glitter.

Mixed Media Blessings Box, Tracey Sabella, Leaky Shed Studio, Lindy's Stamp Gang, Prima, Helmar, Petaloo
Front view - I cut each of the Moroccan Borders into two pieces, cutting and sanding the cut ends to look like the laser cut ends. I repeated the border on all four sides. The Fancy Keyhole and border are colored the same as the Ornate Banner on the top of the lid.

The cross is a metal charm I painted with gesso and misted.
